The short answer

How much does liver cancer treatment cost in India?

There is no single price, because liver cancer is treated in very different ways depending on the tumour and on how well the liver is working. A single procedure such as ablation or TACE costs far less than a long course of medicines, and a liver transplant costs far more than everything else on this page.

Why liver cancer is harder to price than most cancers

Many treatments are priced per procedure, and some people need the same procedure more than once. Others are priced per cycle of medicine, and the bill depends on how long the medicine keeps working. Underneath all of this sits the liver itself. If there is cirrhosis, the cost of managing fluid, bleeding risk and confusion runs alongside the cancer treatment and is often forgotten in the first estimate.

Which liver cancer this page is about

This page is about cancer that started in the liver, mainly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC, the commonest kind of primary liver cancer). If the cancer spread to the liver from the bowel, breast or another organ, the cost follows the original cancer instead. Our page on what secondary liver cancer means explains the difference.

The figures below are indicative ranges for Hyderabad, not a quote for your treatment.

Indicative cost

What do the main liver cancer treatments cost in Hyderabad?

These are 2026 Hyderabad estimates, given as ranges. Your own figure depends on the plan, the hospital and your cover.

₹50,000 – ₹1,50,000

Radiofrequency ablation

Heat used to destroy a small tumour through a needle. Suits a few small tumours only.

₹75,000 – ₹2,50,000

TACE, per session

Chemotherapy delivered into the tumour's blood supply. Some people need it repeated.

₹3,00,000 – ₹6,00,000

Liver resection, open

Removing the part of the liver that holds the tumour, through a larger cut.

₹3,50,000 – ₹7,00,000

Liver resection, laparoscopic

The same operation through small keyhole cuts, where the tumour's position allows it.

₹1,50,000 – ₹3,00,000

SBRT, per course

Precisely focused radiation, given over a short course.

₹80,000 – ₹3,00,000 or more

Systemic therapy, per cycle

Immunotherapy or targeted therapy given through the whole body. The total depends on how many cycles are needed.

₹3,00,000 – ₹12,00,000 or more

Full multi-step treatment

When several treatments are combined or given one after another.

Indicative only, 2026 Hyderabad estimates. Liver transplant, TARE or Y-90, microwave ablation, scans, biopsy, endoscopy, draining fluid and antiviral medicines are quoted separately. Insurance, Aarogyasri, Ayushman Bharat, CGHS, ECHS and ESI can change your out-of-pocket cost a great deal. Always ask for a written, itemised estimate against your own cover.

What moves the bill

Why can two people with liver cancer pay very different amounts?

The stage and the number of tumours

A single small tumour found on surveillance may need one procedure. Larger or multiple tumours often need repeated procedures or a long course of medicines.

How well the liver works

Cirrhosis adds costs of its own: endoscopy to check for varices, medicines for fluid and confusion, and sometimes hospital stays that have nothing to do with the tumour.

Which medicine, and for how long

Systemic treatment is paid cycle by cycle. The total depends on how long it keeps the cancer controlled. The sorafenib price guide and the immunotherapy pages cover individual medicines.

Transplant sits in a category of its own

A transplant costs far more than any other treatment here, and a living donor adds the donor's own surgery and care. A deceased donor organ through Jeevandan changes the arithmetic. See transplant cost and what it includes.

Jeevandan rules change. Check the current position with the transplant centre, as of the time you apply.

Leave a number, we will call you

One field. No form to fill in, and no charge for the call.

Before you start

How do I get a realistic estimate and use a scheme?

Get the plan before the price

Ask which treatment is being recommended, and whether it is one step or several. A price without a plan is a guess. The tumour board review is where the plan is set.

Ask for a written, itemised estimate

It should list the procedure, the stay, medicines, scans and follow-up separately. Ask what is not included, especially repeat procedures and treatment of cirrhosis.

Check your scheme or insurance early

Aarogyasri and Ayushman Bharat cover listed procedures at empanelled hospitals, and the lists change. Our page on whether Aarogyasri covers liver cancer explains how it works. Insurers often need pre-approval before a procedure.

Keep every paper from day one

Reports, bills, discharge summaries and prescriptions are needed for claims, relief funds and scheme renewals. The CION team can help you with scheme paperwork.

Commonly believed

Which beliefs about cost lead families astray?

"The most expensive treatment must be the most effective."

The right treatment depends on the tumour and the liver. A small, well-placed tumour may be treated very well by ablation, which is one of the cheaper options. Price is not a measure of fit.

"Insurance will not pay because of hepatitis or alcohol."

Policies differ. Some exclusions apply and some do not, depending on the wording and when the policy began. Read the policy and ask the insurer in writing before assuming you have no cover.

"If we cannot afford a transplant, nothing else is worth doing."

Transplant suits only a small group of people. Many are treated with surgery, ablation, TACE or medicines, and the team will explain what is realistic for your situation.

"Herbal tonics are a cheaper way to start."

Delay usually costs more later, and some herbal products can harm a liver that is already damaged. Tell your oncologist about anything you take.

Being straight with you

What can this page not tell you?

It cannot tell you what your own treatment will cost. That depends on a plan made after the scans, the blood tests that show liver function, and a review by the treating team. It also depends on where each step happens, because procedures such as TACE, ablation and surgery are coordinated through accredited partner hospitals, and your team will tell you where each takes place.

It cannot tell you what a scheme will pay

Aarogyasri, Ayushman Bharat, CGHS, ECHS and ESI each have their own lists and rules, and these change over time. Check the details at the moment you apply. This page is general information, not financial or legal advice.

Who this does not apply to

This page does not cover cancer that spread to the liver from another organ, liver tumours in children, or gallbladder cancer. For the full treatment picture in Hyderabad, see our page on liver cancer treatment in Hyderabad.

If money is worrying you, say so at the first visit. It is easier to plan around a budget than to change course midway.

Questions we are asked

Common questions about the cost of liver cancer treatment

What is the cheapest treatment for liver cancer?

For a small tumour, ablation is often one of the less expensive options. But the cheapest treatment is only right if it suits the tumour and the liver. Ask the team why a particular option is recommended, and what the alternatives would cost.

Does Aarogyasri cover liver cancer treatment?

Aarogyasri covers listed cancer procedures and treatments at empanelled hospitals, for families who qualify. What is covered and how much changes over time, so check at the moment you apply. The hospital's scheme desk can confirm the current position.

Why is the TACE estimate a range?

The price depends on the materials used, the size and number of tumours, and the hospital stay. Some people need TACE more than once, so ask whether your estimate covers a single session or the whole planned course.

How much does a liver transplant cost?

A transplant is quoted separately by licensed transplant centres and costs far more than other treatments. The total depends on whether the organ comes from a living or a deceased donor. Buying or selling organs is illegal in India.

Does health insurance cover immunotherapy for liver cancer?

Many policies now cover modern cancer medicines, but limits and conditions vary widely. Ask your insurer in writing whether the specific treatment is covered, whether day-care treatment counts, and whether pre-approval is needed for each cycle.

Are scans and biopsy included in the treatment cost?

Usually not. Scans, biopsy, blood tests and endoscopy are often billed separately, before and during treatment. Ask for them to be listed in your written estimate so the total is not a surprise.

Is treatment in Hyderabad cheaper than in other cities?

Prices vary by hospital more than by city. For families from Telangana and Andhra districts, the bigger savings often come from planning travel and stay well and from using a scheme they already qualify for.

How can CION help with the cost?

The team can explain the plan, help you get a written estimate and help with scheme and insurance paperwork. Call the CION helpline with your reports, and someone will explain the likely steps and what to ask about cover.

What moves the figure

What affects the cost

Four things change the total more than anything else.

The technique used

A shaped or image-guided delivery costs more than a conventional one, and is chosen on clinical grounds rather than preference.

How many sessions

The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.

Supporting tests

Scans, blood work and pathology done alongside treatment are billed separately.

Your cover

Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS or cashless insurance usually change the out-of-pocket figure substantially.

Paying for it

Insurance, schemes and payment

What you actually pay usually differs a great deal from the sticker figure.
