Liver transplant cost in India and in Hyderabad: what makes up the bill | CION Cancer Clinics

There is no single price for a liver transplant. The bill depends on the transplant centre, on whether the liver comes from a living or deceased donor, and on how the recovery goes. This page explains each part of the cost, how living and deceased donor bills differ, and how to get a written, itemised estimate before your family starts raising money. At CION Cancer Clinics, a multidisciplinary tumour board weighs your liver function and your scans before recommending any treatment.

The short answer

How much does a liver transplant cost in Hyderabad?

A liver transplant is one of the most expensive treatments in Indian medicine, and there is no single fair price we can print. The bill depends on the transplant centre, on whether the liver comes from a living or a deceased donor, and on how long you and any donor stay in hospital. Only a licensed transplant centre can give you a real figure, and it should be written down and itemised.

Why this page gives no number

Figures quoted online swing widely and usually leave things out: the donor's own operation, the assessment tests, the intensive care stay, or the medicines that continue for life afterwards. A low headline number that later doubles hurts a family far more than an honest range from the centre itself. So this page explains what makes up the bill, and how to get a figure you can plan around.

Who this page is about

It is about transplant for primary liver cancer, usually hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC, the cancer that starts in liver cells) in a liver already scarred by cirrhosis. Cancer that spread to the liver from the bowel, breast or elsewhere is not treated with a transplant, so these costs do not apply to it. Read who a transplant is for before planning money around one.

CION does not perform transplants. Our oncologists help you understand whether a transplant is worth asking about, and refer you to licensed transplant centres.

What moves the bill

Why do two families get such different transplant quotes?

The estimate you are given is the sum of several separate parts. Ask which of them each quote includes.

The assessment

Before anyone is listed, the transplant team runs many tests on the heart, lungs, kidneys, blood and the cancer itself. This is often billed separately from the operation.

The type of donor

A living donor transplant means two operations and two hospital stays on one bill. A deceased donor transplant has one operation but can involve a long, costly wait while the liver is kept stable.

Intensive care and complications

Most of the difference between an expected and a final bill comes from extra days in intensive care, infection, bleeding or a return to theatre. Ask how the centre charges if the stay runs longer.

Ask the centre

  • Is the quote a package or itemised?
  • What is excluded from the package?
  • How are extra days charged?

Treatment while waiting

Many people with liver cancer need bridging treatment, such as TACE or ablation, to hold the tumour in check before the transplant. These are quoted separately.

Medicines for life

Anti-rejection medicines, regular blood tests and clinic visits continue for as long as the new liver works. This is a lasting monthly cost, not a one-time bill.

Side by side

Living donor or deceased donor: how the costs differ

Living donor transplant Deceased donor transplant
Two operations, the donor's and the patient's, on one bill One operation, for the patient only
The donor's tests, stay and recovery are part of the cost No donor costs, but waiting can bring repeated admissions
The date can usually be planned The call can come at any time, so travel and family plans must be ready
The donor's health must be protected first, whatever the cost Organs are allocated under the state programme, not by payment

Leave a number, we will call you

One field. No form to fill in, and no charge for the call.

Getting a real figure

How do we get a written estimate we can rely on?

Confirm a transplant is being considered

An oncologist and a hepatologist (a liver specialist) first decide whether the cancer and the liver suit a transplant. There is no point raising money for an operation that is not on the table.

Ask the transplant centre for an itemised estimate

Request the assessment, the operation, the expected intensive care stay, the donor's costs if any, and the first months of medicines as separate lines. Ask what is excluded.

Check your insurance and scheme cover in writing

Send the estimate to your insurer or the scheme desk and ask what they will pay, what they will not, and whether the donor is covered. Our page on insurance and scheme cover for transplant lists the questions.

Plan for after discharge

Add the lasting cost of medicines, tests, travel to follow-up visits and a stay near the centre in the early weeks. Families from the districts often forget this part.

Commonly believed

What families often assume about transplant money

"If we can pay more, we can get a liver sooner."

No. Deceased donor livers in Telangana are allocated through the Jeevandan programme by medical rules, not by payment. Buying or selling an organ is illegal in India, and no doctor, centre or agent can lawfully arrange it.

"The quote is the whole cost."

A package quote covers a set number of days and listed items. Complications, extra days and lifelong medicines usually sit outside it. Ask what happens if the stay runs longer.

"Government schemes never cover a transplant."

Some state and central schemes do support liver transplant at empanelled centres. The rules, eligible centres and limits change often, so they must be checked at the time you apply.

"A transplant is always the cheapest route in the end."

For some people it is the right treatment. For many others, surgery, ablation or TACE is the better choice for the cancer and the liver. Cost should follow the medical decision, not lead it.

Being straight with you

What this page cannot tell you

It cannot tell you what your transplant will cost. Only the transplant centre that assesses you can do that, once it knows your tests, your donor situation and how sick your liver is. Treat any figure seen online, or heard from another family, as a story about someone else.

It cannot tell you whether you qualify

Whether a transplant suits your cancer depends on the size and number of tumours, whether they have spread into blood vessels, and your general health. Our page on the Milan criteria explains how that judgement is made.

Who this does not apply to

It does not apply to cancer that spread to the liver from another organ, to most bile duct cancers, or to a liver cancer that has already spread outside the liver. For those readers, cost planning starts with a different treatment.

It is not financial or legal advice

Insurance terms and scheme rules are set by the insurer and the government, as of 2026, and they change. Ask the insurer, the scheme desk or the transplant centre's financial counsellor for the current position.

Questions we are asked

Common questions about liver transplant cost

Why will nobody give us an exact transplant price on the phone?

Because the true cost depends on tests that have not yet been done, on the donor, and on how the recovery goes. A centre that quotes a firm figure without assessing you is guessing. Ask instead for a written, itemised estimate after the first assessment.

Is a transplant cheaper in Hyderabad than in other cities?

Costs vary more between centres than between cities. Staying near home also saves travel and accommodation, which matters for the long follow-up period. Compare written estimates covering the same items, rather than headline figures, before deciding.

Who pays for the living donor's operation?

Usually the recipient's family, as part of the same bill. Some insurance policies cover donor costs and many do not, so ask in writing. Read our page on living donor transplant for the risks a donor accepts.

Does Aarogyasri cover a liver transplant?

Telangana's scheme has supported liver transplant at empanelled centres, but the eligible centres, rules and limits change. Ask the Aarogyasri desk at the transplant centre what applies on the day you apply. CION can help you with the paperwork for treatments given at CION centres.

Is a deceased donor transplant free in Telangana?

The donated liver is a gift and is never sold. The hospital still charges for the assessment, operation, intensive care and medicines. Registration and allocation run through Jeevandan, and its rules should be checked with the transplant centre.

What costs continue after the transplant?

Anti-rejection medicines, regular blood tests, clinic visits and scans to watch for the cancer returning. These continue for life. Ask the centre for a realistic monthly figure for the first year and for later years, and include it in your planning.

Can we raise money through crowdfunding?

Many families do. Ask the transplant centre for an official estimate letter, because most platforms and donors want one. Keep every receipt. Funds should go to the hospital directly where possible, and never to anyone offering to find an organ.

Can CION tell us whether a transplant is worth considering?

Yes. A CION oncologist can review your scans and reports with the tumour board and tell you honestly whether a transplant is worth exploring, or whether another treatment suits you better. If it is, we refer you to licensed transplant centres.

What moves the figure

What affects the cost

Four things change the total more than anything else.

The technique used

A shaped or image-guided delivery costs more than a conventional one, and is chosen on clinical grounds rather than preference.

How many sessions

The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.

Supporting tests

Scans, blood work and pathology done alongside treatment are billed separately.

Your cover

Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS or cashless insurance usually change the out-of-pocket figure substantially.

Paying for it
