Liver cancer myths in Telugu families, and what is true | CION Cancer Clinics

Many liver cancer myths in Telugu families delay scans and treatment, even though they come from care. Drinking is not the only cause, jaundice is usually not cancer, and a biopsy rarely spreads anything. This page sets out the common beliefs and the facts, with the Telugu words families use at home beside their English meaning, for the son or daughter explaining it to an elder. At CION Cancer Clinics in Hyderabad, our oncologists explain liver cancer in plain words and plan care around you and your family.

Commonly believed

Which liver cancer myths do Telugu families hear most often?

These beliefs usually come from love and from what an elder saw happen years ago. Each one has delayed a scan or a treatment for someone. Here is what is actually true.

"Only people who drink get liver cancer."

In Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, long-term hepatitis B and fatty liver are major causes, in people who have never touched alcohol. Anyone with cirrhosis, from any cause, carries a raised risk. More on this in only drinkers get liver cancer.

"Kamerlu (jaundice) always means cancer, and herbal drops or a thread will clear it."

Most jaundice is caused by hepatitis, gallstones or medicines, not cancer. Its cause has to be found with blood tests and a scan. Eye drops, threads and herbal mixtures do not treat any cause, and some herbs can injure a weak liver further.

"A biopsy or an operation makes the cancer spread."

Doctors plan biopsies and surgery carefully to keep that risk very small. Often a liver cancer can be diagnosed on a CT or MRI alone, with no needle at all. Avoiding a test because of this fear delays the treatment that could control the tumour.

"Stop dal, eggs and meat to rest the liver."

People with cirrhosis or liver cancer usually need more protein, not less, to keep their muscles and strength. Cutting it makes them weaker. Ask the team before changing the diet, and read the protein myth.

"Once it is liver cancer, nothing can be done."

A small cancer found on a surveillance scan is often curable, with surgery, ablation or a transplant. Larger cancers can still be controlled for a time with TACE, radiation or medicines. What is possible depends on the tumour and on how well the liver works.

Why they stay

Why do these beliefs feel so true to the family?

Most myths start with something an elder really saw. A relative was operated on and died soon after. Someone had a biopsy and got worse. In those stories the cancer was usually found very late, when no treatment could change much. The test or the operation is remembered, and the late diagnosis is forgotten.

Shame keeps some of them alive

Liver disease carries stigma in many families. Hepatitis B is whispered about, and drinking is hidden from the doctor. None of these is a moral failing. Hepatitis B is often passed from mother to baby at birth, long before anyone knew. When a family feels judged, it stops asking questions, and myths fill the gap.

Talking to an elder without arguing

Telling a grandmother she is wrong rarely works. It helps more to say what the doctor said, in Telugu, and to bring the elder to the appointment. Many joint families decide together. If the person the family listens to hears the doctor directly, the myth often loosens on its own.

Words in Telugu

What do the Telugu words for liver problems mean?

Doctors in Hyderabad will often use the English word. These are the Telugu words families use at home, beside their meaning.

కాలేయం (kaaleyam)
The liver. కాలేయ క్యాన్సర్ means liver cancer, usually meaning cancer that started in the liver itself.
కామెర్లు (kaamerlu)
Jaundice, yellow eyes and skin. A sign that bilirubin has built up. It has many causes, most of them not cancer.
కాలేయంలో గడ్డ (kaaleyamlo gadda)
A lump or spot on the liver. Many are harmless, like a haemangioma or a cyst. Every one still needs the follow-up scan the doctor asks for.
కొవ్వు కాలేయం (kovvu kaaleyam)
Fatty liver. Very common and usually harmless on its own. In a few people it slowly scars the liver over many years.
కాలేయం గట్టిపడటం (kaaleyam gattipadatam)
Hardening of the liver, the everyday phrase for cirrhosis. Cirrhosis from any cause raises the risk of liver cancer.
కడుపులో నీరు (kadupulo neeru)
Water in the abdomen, which doctors call ascites. Fever or pain with this swelling needs hospital the same day.

What is actually true

What should every family know about liver cancer?

Early liver cancer is usually silent

Feeling well, or a normal liver function test, does not rule it out. That is why people at risk are offered an ultrasound, often with an AFP blood test, every six months.

Hepatitis B can be controlled

Antiviral tablets, decided by a hepatologist or physician, keep the virus in check. They do not remove it, so follow-up continues. Family members can be tested and vaccinated. See our hepatitis B myths in Telugu families.

It does not spread by touch

Liver cancer is not contagious. You cannot catch it by sharing food, a bed or a plate. Hepatitis B spreads through blood and from mother to baby, which vaccination prevents.

Treatment depends on two things

The size and spread of the tumour, and how well the rest of the liver works. A tumour board looks at both before suggesting a plan.

Being straight with you

What this page cannot tell you

It cannot tell you whether a spot, a report or a symptom in your family is cancer. That needs the right scan, read by a radiologist and reviewed by a doctor who knows the full history. It also cannot tell you which treatment suits your relative, because that depends on the tumour and the liver together.

Who this does not apply to

This page is about cancer that starts in the liver. If the scan says cancer has spread to the liver from the bowel, breast or another organ, the myths and the facts are different. Read primary versus secondary liver cancer first. A fuller Telugu edition of this page is being prepared separately.

Questions we are asked

Common questions about liver cancer myths

Is liver cancer always caused by drinking?

No. In this region hepatitis B and fatty liver cause many liver cancers in people who have never had alcohol. Alcohol is one cause among several. Whatever the cause, it is not a reason for blame, and telling the doctor honestly about drinking only helps the plan.

Can herbal medicines treat jaundice?

No herbal remedy treats the cause of jaundice, and some can injure a liver that is already weak. If your relative is taking anything, tell the doctor plainly. No one at CION will judge you for it. Knowing helps the team keep treatment safe.

Will a liver biopsy make the cancer spread?

The risk is very small and doctors plan the needle path to keep it that way. Many liver cancers are diagnosed on a CT or MRI alone, without any biopsy. If a biopsy is advised, ask why it is needed and what it will change.

Should we stop giving protein to someone with liver disease?

Usually not. Most people with cirrhosis or liver cancer need enough protein to keep their strength. Older advice to cut protein has changed. Ask the team or a dietitian before changing what your relative eats, especially if there has been confusion in the past.

Can liver cancer be passed by sharing food or touch?

No. Liver cancer is not contagious. Hepatitis B, which can lead to liver cancer, passes through blood and from mother to baby. Household members can be tested and vaccinated. Sharing meals, hugging and caring for your relative are completely safe.

Is liver cancer always a death sentence?

No. A small cancer found on a surveillance scan is often curable. Larger cancers can often be controlled for a time. No page can tell you what will happen to your relative. The treating team can explain the options once they have seen the scans and blood tests.

How do we explain this to an elder who believes a myth?

Bring them to the appointment and let them hear the doctor directly, in Telugu if possible. Avoid arguing at home. Ask the doctor to answer the elder's own question. People often change their view when they feel listened to rather than corrected.

Where can we get help in Telugu?

Call the CION helpline and ask to speak in Telugu. Someone will explain the reports, the next step and which centre is closest to you. One helpline serves every CION centre, including for families travelling from the districts.
