The short answer
Where can I get the hepatitis B vaccine in Hyderabad, and what does it cost?
Babies get the hepatitis B vaccine free under India's Universal Immunisation Programme, at government hospitals and primary health centres. Adults usually pay for it at a private hospital, clinic or vaccination centre. The vaccine itself is one of the cheaper vaccines you can buy, but the price varies by brand, by clinic and by whether a consultation fee is added.
Why it matters for liver cancer
Long-standing hepatitis B infection is one of the commonest causes of liver cancer in India. The vaccine prevents the infection in people who do not have it yet. That makes it one of the very few vaccines that prevents a cancer. Read more on why hepatitis B vaccination is cancer prevention.
Who this page is not for
If you already have hepatitis B, the vaccine will not treat it or clear it. What you need instead is a doctor who can tell you whether you need tablets and regular liver checks. Your family, though, may well need the vaccine.
Ask for a written price before the first dose, including any consultation or injection charge.Where to go
Which places in Hyderabad give the hepatitis B vaccine?
The vaccine is the same wherever you get it. What changes is the cost, the waiting time and whether a test is offered first.
Government hospitals and health centres
Children's doses under the immunisation programme are free here. Some government hospitals also vaccinate adults at higher risk, such as health workers. Availability for other adults varies, so ask first.
Private hospitals and clinics
Most adults in Hyderabad are vaccinated here. A doctor can check whether you need a blood test first and give you a written schedule. Prices differ widely between clinics.
Vaccination centres and pharmacies
Some dedicated vaccination centres and larger pharmacies give adult vaccines. Make sure a trained person gives the injection and records it on a card.
Your workplace
Hospitals, laboratories and some large employers vaccinate staff. If you work in healthcare, ask your employer before paying yourself.
Keep with you
- A card with each dose and date
- The vaccine name and batch
- Any blood test result taken before or after

How does adult hepatitis B vaccination actually work?
Decide whether to test first
For a household contact of a carrier, a blood test before the first dose tells you whether you are already infected or already protected. See where to get tested in Hyderabad.
Have the first dose
The vaccine is an injection into the upper arm. Most people feel only a sore arm for a short while.
Complete the course
Adults usually need a series of doses spread over several months. The clinic will give you the dates. Missing a date does not mean starting again, so simply go back for the next dose.
Check the response if advised
Health workers and close contacts of a carrier are often advised a blood test after the course. Read about checking whether the vaccine worked.

Commonly believed
Four things families say about the vaccine, and what is true
Many adults in India were born before the vaccine was routine for every baby. If you have no card, ask your doctor whether to test or simply be vaccinated.
Often it is not. Many spouses of carriers are never infected. A blood test shows where you stand, and vaccination protects you if you are not infected. Nobody is to blame for the infection.
It cannot. It contains no live virus. It teaches the body to recognise a protein from the virus's surface.
It will not. It prevents infection in people who do not have it. Hepatitis B in someone already infected is controlled by monitoring and, when needed, tablets prescribed by a hepatologist or physician.
Being straight with you
What this page cannot tell you
It cannot give you an exact price. The cost of a dose in Hyderabad depends on the brand, the clinic and what is added for the consultation and the injection. Ask for a written price for the full course, not just the first dose, before you start.
It cannot tell you your own schedule
Most adults follow a standard course, but people with kidney disease, cirrhosis or a weak immune system may need a different plan. Your doctor sets that. More detail on schedules and boosters is in the hepatitis B vaccine in India.
Where CION fits
CION is a cancer clinic and does not run a vaccination clinic. If you are starting cancer treatment, your oncologist will check your hepatitis B status first, because some treatments can wake the virus up. If you are a carrier worried about liver cancer, our team can help plan surveillance with your hepatologist. Families can read about vaccinating the household of a carrier.
If you are unsure whether you need the vaccine or a test, call the helpline and we will point you to the right clinic.Questions we are asked
Common questions about hepatitis B vaccination in Hyderabad
Is the hepatitis B vaccine free for adults in Hyderabad?
Not usually. It is free for babies under the immunisation programme. Some government hospitals vaccinate adults at higher risk, such as health workers, and some employers pay for staff. Most other adults pay at a private clinic, so ask for the full price before starting.
How many doses does an adult need?
Most adults need a short series of doses spread over several months. The clinic gives you the dates on a card. People with kidney disease, cirrhosis or a weak immune system may need a different plan, which their doctor will set.
Should I get tested before the vaccine?
If you live with someone who has hepatitis B, or you have other risk factors, a blood test first is sensible. It shows whether you are already infected or already protected. For many other adults, a doctor may suggest going straight to vaccination.
I missed my second dose. Do I start again?
No. You do not need to restart the course. Go back and have the next dose as soon as you can, then carry on with the remaining dates. Keep your card so the clinic can see what you have already had.
Do I need a booster later?
Most healthy people who complete the course do not need routine boosters. Health workers, people on dialysis and close contacts of a carrier may be advised a blood test to check their protection. Your doctor will say whether a booster is needed.
Is the vaccine safe in pregnancy?
Hepatitis B vaccine is generally considered safe in pregnancy when there is a reason to give it. Every pregnant woman should be tested for hepatitis B, so that her baby can be protected at birth. Discuss it with your obstetrician.
My mother has hepatitis B. Should all of us be vaccinated?
Household members should be tested, and those who are not infected or protected should be vaccinated. This is ordinary family care, not a judgement on anyone. Children and adults who turn out to be carriers need a doctor's assessment instead of the vaccine.
Can CION vaccinate me?
CION does not run a vaccination clinic. We check hepatitis B status before cancer treatment and help carriers plan liver surveillance with their hepatologist. For the vaccine itself, a government hospital, private clinic or vaccination centre near you is the right place.
Meet CION's liver cancer specialists. Bring your scan reports and liver blood tests.
Our medical and surgical oncologists plan liver cancer care together, weighing the tumour and how well your liver works before choosing surgery, a liver-directed procedure or medicines.
