The short answer
What does not cause liver cancer?
Spicy food, a blow to the stomach, hugging or sharing a plate with someone who has liver cancer, mobile phones and a single episode of jaundice do not cause liver cancer. Most primary liver cancer grows from a liver that has been damaged for a long time, usually by hepatitis B, hepatitis C, alcohol or fatty liver disease.
Why the myths matter
Families often spend energy on the wrong worry. They throw out the cooking oil, stop the patient eating with the children, or blame a fall from years ago. Meanwhile the real causes go untested. A brother is never checked for hepatitis B. A cousin keeps drinking because he thinks only whisky is harmful and toddy is safe.
Which liver cancer this page is about
This page is about primary liver cancer, which starts in the liver itself. Many people told there is "a spot on the liver" actually have a cancer that spread there from the bowel, breast, stomach or lung. That is a different illness with different causes. If that is your situation, read the two very different things called liver cancer first.

Five things people blame, and what is actually true
Chilli and masala do not cause liver cancer. The one real food risk is mould. Groundnuts, maize and chillies stored damp can grow a mould that makes aflatoxin, a poison that damages the liver over years. The problem is spoiled storage, not spice. Our page on aflatoxin explains what to look for.
Cancer itself cannot pass from one person to another. Hepatitis B, which can lead to liver cancer, spreads through blood, sex and from mother to baby at birth. It does not spread through sharing meals, plates, hugging or coughing. Read more in liver cancer is not contagious.
An injury can bruise or tear the liver, and that heals. There is no good evidence that a single blow causes cancer. Often the scan after an accident simply finds a tumour that was already there.
Most jaundice in childhood comes from hepatitis A, which clears completely and does not lead to cancer. What matters is whether the jaundice was from hepatitis B or C that never cleared. A simple blood test answers that.
Fatty liver is very common, and most people who have it never get liver cancer. The risk rises when fat leads to scarring and then cirrhosis. That is why your doctor looks at scarring, not only the word "fatty" on the report.

Do everyday things like hair dye, phones or non-vegetarian food cause it?
These come up again and again in families. None of them is a known cause of primary liver cancer.
Hair dye, plastic and cookware
Studies have not shown that ordinary hair dye, plastic boxes or aluminium and non-stick pans cause liver cancer. Our page on hair dye, plastic and cookware goes through the evidence.
Mobile phones and Wi-Fi
There is no known way that phone or Wi-Fi signals could damage the liver. They play no part in liver cancer.
Meat, eggs and protein
Eating non-vegetarian food does not cause liver cancer. Cutting protein can harm a person who already has liver disease, because the body needs it to keep muscle and fight infection.
Ordinary medicines used as told
A paracetamol for fever, or blood pressure tablets taken as prescribed, are not liver cancer causes. Overdoses and unprescribed steroids are a separate matter. Always tell your doctor everything you take.
Stress and worry
Stress makes life harder, and it can push people towards drinking or smoking. Stress on its own is not a known cause of liver cancer.

What actually raises liver cancer risk, and what does not?
Leave a number, we will call you
One field. No form to fill in, and no charge for the call.
The hepatitis B vaccine was the first vaccine shown to prevent a cancer. Protecting a newborn against hepatitis B soon after birth protects that child's liver for life.
Being straight with you
What this page cannot tell you
It cannot tell you why one particular person got liver cancer. Often there is a clear cause, such as hepatitis B found on a blood test. Sometimes there are two or three causes acting together. Occasionally no cause is found at all, even after every test. That is not a failure of the doctors, and it is not anyone's fault.
It cannot clear your own risk
If you are worried about yourself or a relative, the useful step is a check of the real causes: blood tests for hepatitis B and C, a question about drinking, and a look at weight and sugar levels. Our page on lowering your risk today sets out what to do first.
Who this does not apply to
If you already have cirrhosis or long-term hepatitis B, the myths on this page are beside the point. You need regular surveillance scans, whatever you eat or avoid. Ask your doctor whether you should be on a screening plan.
If you are unsure whether a worry is real, call the helpline and ask. Someone will answer you honestly.Questions we are asked
Common questions about what does not cause liver cancer
Can I catch liver cancer from a family member?
No. Cancer cells cannot pass from one person to another through touch, food, coughing or sharing a home. What can pass is hepatitis B, through blood, sex or from mother to baby. That is why relatives of someone with hepatitis B are offered a blood test and the vaccine, without any blame attached.
Does eating spicy or oily food cause liver cancer?
No. Chilli, masala and fried food are not known causes. Very oily food can add to weight gain, and weight gain can lead to fatty liver over time. The only food risk with a direct link is mould on stored groundnuts, maize and chillies, which produces aflatoxin.
Does drinking only beer or toddy keep the liver safe?
No. The liver responds to the alcohol itself, whatever the drink. Beer, toddy, wine, whisky and country liquor all carry alcohol, and heavy drinking of any of them over years can scar the liver. The type of glass does not change that.
Can a benign lump in the liver turn into cancer?
The common benign lumps, such as a haemangioma (a small tangle of blood vessels) or a simple cyst, do not usually turn into cancer. A few kinds, such as some adenomas, are watched more closely. Keep any follow-up scan your doctor asks for, because only the scan can show what the lump is doing.
Is liver cancer always caused by drinking?
No. Many people with liver cancer have never drunk alcohol. In India, hepatitis B is a very common cause, and fatty liver linked to diabetes and weight is rising. Assuming a patient must have been drinking hurts families and can delay the right tests.
Do liver tonics or detox drinks prevent liver cancer?
There is no good evidence that any tonic or detox product prevents liver cancer. Some herbal products can harm the liver, and the harm is worse when the liver is already scarred. If you take something like this, tell your doctor openly. They need to know, and they will not judge you.
Did my old jaundice cause my liver cancer?
It depends on what caused the jaundice. Hepatitis A and most short illnesses clear completely and leave no lasting damage. If the jaundice came from hepatitis B or C that stayed in the body, that infection can slowly scar the liver. A blood test shows which one it was.
Where do I start if I am worried about my liver?
Ask your doctor for blood tests for hepatitis B and hepatitis C, and be honest about drinking. Bring any scan reports you already have. If you are not sure who to see, call the CION helpline and someone will tell you which tests make sense for you.
