CION Cancer Clinics
The cost of diagnosing liver cancer: scans, markers and biopsy | CION Cancer Clinics
A liver cancer diagnosis is built from a few separately priced tests: a detailed CT or MRI, blood tests such as AFP, sometimes a biopsy and an endoscopy. What you pay depends on which of these you actually need, where they are done and your cover. This page explains each test, what pushes the bill up, and how to get a written estimate before you pay. At CION Cancer Clinics, we explain costs in writing and help families from across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh plan treatment in Hyderabad.

The short answer
How much does it cost to find out if a liver spot is cancer?
The diagnosis is usually the smaller part of the bill. It is made of a few separate items: a detailed scan, a set of blood tests, sometimes a biopsy, and an endoscopy if cirrhosis is suspected. Each one is priced separately, and the total depends on which of them you actually need.
Why there is no single price
Two people with the same spot on an ultrasound can need very different tests. Someone with cirrhosis and a typical-looking tumour on a good scan may never need a biopsy. Someone with a healthy liver, or a scan that is hard to read, usually will. Prices also vary between diagnostic centres, between a CT and an MRI, and between a scheme patient and a cash patient.
First, which liver cancer is this about?
This page is about tests for cancer that starts in the liver. Most people told they have "a spot on the liver" after a scan have cancer that spread there from somewhere else, such as the bowel or breast. That needs a different search for where it began, and our page on how liver cancer is diagnosed explains how doctors tell the two apart.
Skipping a test to save money often costs more later, because treatment planned on an unclear picture may have to be redone. The parts of the bill
Which tests make up a liver cancer diagnosis?
Not everyone needs all of these. Your doctor chooses from this list based on your scan, your liver and your history.
The detailed scan
A triple-phase CT or a liver MRI takes pictures as a contrast dye flows through the liver. Liver cancer has a typical pattern on these pictures. An MRI usually costs more than a CT. See liver imaging in Hyderabad for how centres differ.
Blood tests
AFP (alpha-fetoprotein, a protein some liver cancers release), liver function tests, clotting tests and hepatitis B and C tests. These are usually the cheapest part.
Sometimes added
- AFP-L3 and DCP, the other liver markers
- Kidney tests before contrast dye
A biopsy, if needed
A thin needle takes a small piece of the lump for the pathologist to look at. The price includes the procedure, the day-care bed and the pathology report. Special stains on the sample are charged on top.
Staging and liver checks
A chest CT to look for spread, an endoscopy to check for swollen veins (varices), and sometimes a liver stiffness scan (FibroScan). A PET-CT is not routine for primary liver cancer and is ordered only for a reason.
Indicative cost
How does the cost of diagnosis compare with treatment?
CION does not publish rupee figures for scans, markers or biopsy, because they change by centre and by plan. The treatment ranges below are 2026 Hyderabad estimates, shown so you can see the whole picture.
Scans, blood tests and biopsy
Ask the diagnostic partner for a written, itemised estimate before each test.
TACE, per session
A common first treatment when surgery is not possible.
Full multi-step treatment
Where several treatments are combined over time.
Indicative only, 2026 Hyderabad estimates. Insurance, Aarogyasri, Ayushman Bharat, CGHS, ECHS or ESI can change what you pay yourself, and scheme rules change, so check them at the time. Call the helpline for an estimate against your own cover.

What changes the total
Why does one family pay much more than another for the same tests?
Repeat scans
The biggest single driver. A scan done on an older machine, or without all the phases, often cannot be read properly and has to be repeated. Carry every earlier scan on a disc so the team can check it first.
Whether a biopsy is needed
In a cirrhotic liver with a typical scan, doctors can often diagnose without one. Our page on diagnosis without a biopsy explains why. Where the picture is unclear, the biopsy is worth paying for.
The type of centre
Corporate hospitals, standalone diagnostic centres and government hospitals charge very differently for the same scan. The quality of the report matters more than the building.
Your cover
Many insurance policies pay for tests only when you are admitted. Schemes such as Aarogyasri usually cover the work-up linked to a treatment package. Check before you pay cash.
Before you pay
How do I get a written estimate for the diagnostic tests?
Gather what you already have
Every scan report and disc, every blood report and any discharge summary. These often save a test.
Ask which tests are planned, and why
At your CION consultation, ask the doctor to write down each test and what it will decide. CION arranges the scans and biopsy through its diagnostic partners.
Ask for an itemised quote
Request a written estimate per test, including contrast, day-care, pathology and extra stains, so nothing appears later as a surprise.
Check your scheme or insurer
Ask whether the tests are covered and what paperwork is needed. The CION team helps with scheme forms. Our page on Aarogyasri cover explains how the scheme works in liver cancer.
Being straight with you
What this page cannot tell you
It cannot tell you what your own diagnosis will cost, because nobody can say which tests you need until a doctor has seen your scan and your blood results. It also cannot tell you whether the spot on your liver is cancer. Only the right scan, read by an experienced radiologist and reviewed by a tumour board, can begin to answer that.
Who this does not apply to
If your cancer started in another organ and has spread to the liver, the tests and their costs follow that cancer instead. If the patient is a child, the tests are different and are covered on our page on hepatoblastoma in children. Gallbladder cancer is also tested differently.
When not to wait
Do not delay a test you have been told to have while you compare prices. A few days spent getting a quote is fine. Weeks spent waiting for money can let a treatable tumour grow. If cost is the problem, say so to the team early, because there is usually a way to sequence or fund the tests.
If you are unsure which tests are really needed, call the helpline and describe what has been done so far.Questions we are asked
Common questions about the cost of a liver cancer diagnosis
Is a CT or an MRI cheaper for the liver?
A CT is usually cheaper than an MRI. Both can diagnose liver cancer well when they are done with the right phases. Your doctor chooses based on your kidneys, your liver and what earlier scans showed. Paying for the cheaper scan only helps if it answers the question first time.
Do I always need a biopsy to confirm liver cancer?
No. In a person with cirrhosis, a tumour with the typical pattern on a good CT or MRI can be diagnosed without one. A biopsy is needed when the scan is unclear, when the liver is healthy, or when the tumour might be a different type. Your doctor will explain which applies to you.
Is the AFP test enough on its own?
No. AFP is a useful, inexpensive blood test, but some liver cancers do not raise it, and other conditions can. It is read alongside the scan, never instead of it. Our page on marker test costs covers the blood tests in more detail.
Will insurance pay for scans done before admission?
It depends on your policy. Many policies cover tests done in a set period before and after a hospital stay, while purely outpatient tests may not be covered. Read the policy wording or call your insurer before the scan. This is general information, not advice on your own policy.
Does Aarogyasri cover the diagnostic tests?
Aarogyasri usually covers tests linked to an approved treatment package at an empanelled hospital. Coverage for tests done beforehand varies. The rules and packages change, so check with the scheme desk at the time. The CION team can help you with the paperwork.
Can I reuse a scan done at another hospital?
Often, yes, if it was a proper multi-phase scan and you have the disc, not just the printed report. The team will look at the images first. If the scan is missing phases or is too old to plan treatment on, a repeat may be needed.
Is a PET-CT needed to diagnose liver cancer?
Usually not. Many primary liver cancers do not show up clearly on a standard PET-CT, so it is not a routine test. It may be ordered to look for spread in particular cases. If one is suggested, it is fair to ask what it will change.
Where do I start if money is tight?
Tell the team at your first visit. Bring every earlier report so nothing is repeated without reason, and ask which tests decide treatment and which can wait. Call the CION helpline and someone will explain the scheme and insurance options for your situation.
What moves the figure
What affects the cost
Four things change the total more than anything else.
The technique used
A shaped or image-guided delivery costs more than a conventional one, and is chosen on clinical grounds rather than preference.
How many sessions
The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.
Supporting tests
Scans, blood work and pathology done alongside treatment are billed separately.
Your cover
Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS or cashless insurance usually change the out-of-pocket figure substantially.
Paying for it
Insurance, schemes and payment
What you actually pay usually differs a great deal from the sticker figure.
