The short answer

Can liver cancer be fully treated in Hyderabad?

Yes. Every main treatment for liver cancer is available in Hyderabad: surgery, transplant, ablation, TACE and TARE, focused radiation and the newer medicines. What families usually lack is not a treatment but a clear route to the right one, in the right order.

The harder question is which one

Liver cancer is unusual because two things decide the plan, not one. The first is the tumour: how big it is, how many there are, and whether it has reached the blood vessels. The second is the liver around it. A liver scarred by cirrhosis may not cope with an operation that a healthy liver would manage easily. A good plan weighs both, and that takes several specialists looking at the same scans together.

First, which liver cancer is this?

This page is about cancer that starts in the liver, usually hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), or in the bile ducts inside it. Many people told about "a spot on the liver" actually have cancer that spread there from the bowel, breast or pancreas. That is treated as the original cancer. If that is you, start with the difference between primary and secondary liver cancer.

Availability is not the problem in Hyderabad. Getting the right specialists to agree on one plan is.

The main options

Which liver cancer treatments can you get in Hyderabad?

Each of these is offered in the city. None of them suits everyone, and the tumour board decides which ones fit your liver.

Treatments that aim to remove the cancer

Liver resection removes the part of the liver holding the tumour. Ablation destroys a small tumour with heat through a needle. A liver transplant replaces the whole liver, cancer and cirrhosis together, at a licensed transplant centre. These are curative options for carefully chosen people found early.

Treatments aimed at the liver

TACE delivers chemotherapy and a blocking agent into the artery feeding the tumour. TARE, also called Y-90, delivers tiny radioactive beads the same way. Focused radiation, called SBRT, treats a tumour from outside the body. These control cancer that cannot be removed.

Medicines that work through the body

Immunotherapy and targeted therapy are used when the cancer has spread or the liver-directed treatments no longer help. Some combinations are given as a drip in a day-care chair. Others are tablets taken at home.

Care that protects the liver

Treating hepatitis B or C, managing fluid in the abdomen, checking for swollen veins in the food pipe, and nutrition support all run alongside cancer treatment. They often decide whether the cancer treatment is safe at all.

Being exact

What does CION do itself, and what does it arrange?

Liver cancer needs more specialists than one building usually holds. This is how the work is divided.

At CION centres Arranged through accredited partners
Consultations and second opinions Ultrasound, triple-phase CT, MRI and PET-CT
Tumour board review of your scans and reports Liver biopsy and pathology
Immunotherapy, targeted therapy and chemotherapy TACE, TARE and ablation by interventional radiologists
Surgical assessment and planning by surgical oncologists The operation itself, and radiation including SBRT
Symptom care, follow-up and surveillance planning Liver transplant, at licensed transplant centres
Help with scheme and insurance paperwork Endoscopy, fluid drainage and hepatitis treatment by hepatologists

From scan to plan

How do you get from a worrying scan to a treatment plan?

Gather what you already have

Collect every scan on a CD or download link, every report, and the latest blood tests, including liver function and AFP. Write down any medicines and herbal tonics being taken. Nothing is too small to bring.

See an oncologist who treats the liver

The first consultation checks whether the diagnosis is secure and whether the scans were done properly. A liver scan needs three timed pictures after contrast. If it was not done that way, it may need repeating.

Have the case discussed together

Your scans go to a tumour board, where the oncologist, surgeon, radiologist and other specialists agree on one plan. This is where the liver's strength is weighed against the tumour.

Receive a written plan

You should leave with the treatment named, the reason for it, where each step will happen and who to call. If any of that is missing, ask before you agree.

Leave a number, we will call you

One field. No form to fill in, and no charge for the call.

Commonly believed

What do families get wrong about treatment in Hyderabad?

"For liver cancer we will have to go to another city."

Every standard treatment, including transplant, is done in Hyderabad. Travelling elsewhere rarely adds an option. It does add delay, cost and distance from the family who will be caring for the patient.

"The biggest hospital will automatically choose the right treatment."

Size is not the test. The test is whether your scans were reviewed by a team that includes a liver surgeon, an interventional radiologist and an oncologist before anyone chose a procedure.

"If one doctor says nothing can be done, that is final."

Sometimes it is. Sometimes it reflects what that one doctor offers. A second opinion from a full team is reasonable, and it can be done quickly from your existing scans.

"The newer medicines are only available abroad."

Several immunotherapy and targeted therapy options for liver cancer are available in India. A few newer ones are not, or only through trials. Your oncologist should tell you honestly which is which.

Being straight with you

What this page cannot tell you

It cannot tell you which treatment fits your tumour and your liver. That depends on the exact size and number of tumours, the blood tests that show how well the liver is working, and how fit you are day to day. Only a team looking at your own scans can answer it.

It cannot give you a price for your plan

Indicative costs are on liver cancer treatment in Hyderabad, but a real figure needs a written, itemised estimate once the plan is known. Scheme cover through Aarogyasri or Ayushman Bharat changes over time, so check it at the time.

Who this page does not apply to

It does not cover cancer that spread to the liver from the bowel, which is handled under colon cancer spread to the liver. It does not cover children, whose liver tumours are different, or gallbladder cancer, which has its own pages.

If you are unsure where to begin, call the helpline with the reports you have. Someone will tell you the next step.

Questions we are asked

Common questions about liver cancer treatment in Hyderabad

Is liver transplant for cancer done in Hyderabad?

Yes, at licensed transplant centres in the city. Only a small group of people with liver cancer qualify, usually those with limited cancer inside a liver failing from cirrhosis. CION oncologists can assess whether a referral makes sense, but cannot influence waiting-list priority or allocation.

Can TACE and Y-90 be done in Hyderabad?

Yes. Both are done by interventional radiologists in hospitals with the right equipment. CION coordinates TACE and TARE through NABH-accredited partner hospitals, and the tumour board decides first whether either suits your liver and tumour.

Are immunotherapy medicines for liver cancer available here?

Several are, including the combinations most often used first for advanced HCC. They are given at CION centres. A few newer medicines are not approved in India yet or come only through trials or import, and your oncologist should say so plainly.

Do I need a biopsy before treatment can start?

Not always. In a liver with cirrhosis, HCC can often be diagnosed from a properly timed CT or MRI alone. A biopsy is needed when the scan pattern is unclear, when bile duct cancer is suspected, or before some medicines. The team will explain which applies to you.

We live in a district. Do we need to stay in Hyderabad?

Usually only for certain steps. Consultations, scan reviews and follow-up can often be arranged around travel, and some review is possible from reports sent ahead. Procedures and surgery need a stay. Ask the team to group appointments so the family makes fewer trips.

Does Aarogyasri cover liver cancer treatment?

Aarogyasri and Ayushman Bharat cover several cancer treatments at empanelled hospitals, but which procedures and medicines are covered changes over time. Carry your card and income documents, and ask the hospital to confirm cover in writing before treatment starts. CION helps with this paperwork.

Who should we see first: a hepatologist or an oncologist?

If cancer is suspected, see an oncologist who works with a liver team, because the treatment decision belongs to that team. A hepatologist remains important for cirrhosis and hepatitis care alongside it. In a good service, both are talking to each other.

How quickly should treatment begin?

There is usually time to get the plan right, but not to drift for months between doctors. Aim to have the scans reviewed and a plan agreed within a few weeks of diagnosis. If you are bleeding, confused or jaundiced with fever, go to hospital today.
