CION Cancer Clinics
Does Aarogyasri cover liver cancer treatment, and what should you check? | CION Cancer Clinics
For eligible families, Aarogyasri can cover several liver cancer treatments, but only those listed as scheme packages and only at empanelled hospitals. Whether your treatment is covered depends on your card, your state, the exact procedure and approval before it starts. This page explains how the scheme works for liver cancer, what to ask, and where families most often get caught out. At CION Cancer Clinics, we explain costs in writing and help families from across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh plan treatment in Hyderabad.

The short answer
Does Aarogyasri pay for liver cancer treatment?
Often, yes, for eligible families. Aarogyasri lists many cancer treatments as packages, and several liver cancer treatments have been among them. But cover applies only to listed packages, at empanelled hospitals, with approval before treatment starts.
Who the scheme is for
Aarogyasri is the Telangana government's health scheme for families who hold an eligible card. Andhra Pradesh runs its own scheme, now called Dr NTR Vaidya Seva, with its own rules. If your card is from Andhra Pradesh, read Aarogyasri and NTR Vaidya Seva first, because the two are not interchangeable.
Why there is no simple yes or no
Liver cancer is treated in many different ways: surgery, ablation, TACE, radiation, tablets, immunotherapy and, rarely, a transplant. Each is a separate package, or is not listed at all. The package list, the rates and the hospitals on the panel are revised from time to time. So the honest answer depends on the treatment your team has planned and the rules on the day you apply. This applies to primary liver cancer and to cancer that has spread to the liver from elsewhere, but the packages used can differ.
Indicative cost
What would liver cancer treatment cost without the scheme?
These 2026 Hyderabad estimates help you see what is at stake if a treatment is not covered. They are ranges, not quotes.
TACE, per session
Many people need more than one session.
Radiofrequency ablation
Heat used to destroy a small tumour through a needle.
Liver resection, open
Removing the part of the liver that holds the tumour.
Systemic therapy, per cycle
Targeted therapy or immunotherapy given over many months.
Indicative only, 2026 Hyderabad estimates. Under Aarogyasri or another scheme, what you pay can be very different, and depends on the listed package and the hospital. Package rates change and are not given here. Call the helpline and we will help you check your own case.
What decides cover
What decides whether your liver cancer treatment is covered?
Five things need to line up. If one is missing, the family usually ends up paying.
An eligible, active card
The patient must be listed on a valid card for the state. Check names and details match the patient's identity documents exactly.
A listed package
The planned treatment must be on the current package list. Some newer treatments and some medicines may not be listed.
An empanelled hospital
The hospital must be on the panel for that specific package, not just on the panel in general.
Ask the scheme desk, not only the billing counter.Approval before treatment
The hospital applies for pre-authorisation with your reports. Treatment started before approval is often not paid for.
Usually needed
- Scan and biopsy or pathology reports
- The treatment plan from your doctor
- The card and identity documents
Cover for the whole course
Liver cancer is rarely treated once. TACE may be repeated, tablets run for months, and scans follow every step. Ask whether each later session, cycle or scan needs a fresh approval, and whether the same hospital can provide all of it under the scheme. A plan that is only partly covered can still leave a large bill.

Treatment by treatment
What should you ask about each liver cancer treatment?
Using the scheme
How do you use Aarogyasri for liver cancer treatment?
Get the diagnosis on paper
Keep copies of every scan, biopsy and blood report. The scheme approves treatment against these, so missing pages cause delays.
Confirm the treatment plan
Ask your doctor to write down the planned treatment clearly. A tumour board review can help settle which option fits before you apply.
Go to the scheme desk first
At the hospital, meet the Aarogyamithra or scheme coordinator before any treatment begins. Ask them to confirm the package and the approval in writing.
Ask about the next step early
Before you are discharged, ask what the next session or cycle will need. Approvals for repeat treatment take time, and starting the paperwork early avoids a gap in care while you wait.
Keep every paper
Keep approvals, discharge summaries and bills. You may need them for the next cycle or session. See how to apply for Aarogyasri for the full paperwork.
Being straight with you
What this page cannot tell you
It cannot tell you whether your treatment will be approved, or what the package pays. Lists, rates and panels change, and only the scheme and the empanelled hospital can confirm your case at the time. This is general information, not legal or financial advice.
Who this does not apply to
If you do not hold an eligible Telangana card, Aarogyasri does not apply to you. Central government employees and pensioners usually use CGHS, ex-servicemen ECHS, and many workers ESI. Others may be covered by Ayushman Bharat or private insurance. Each has its own rules.
Where gaps often appear
Families are most often caught out by medicines that are not listed, by tests done outside the package, and by travel and stay in Hyderabad. Read what Aarogyasri does not cover so you can plan for these early.

Common questions about Aarogyasri and liver cancer
Is liver cancer covered under Aarogyasri?
Several liver cancer treatments have been listed as packages for eligible card holders, at empanelled hospitals. Cover depends on the exact treatment, the hospital and approval before treatment begins. Lists change, so confirm your case with the scheme desk at the hospital before anything is started.
Does Aarogyasri cover TACE?
TACE has been among the procedures listed for liver cancer, but check whether each session is covered and at which hospital. Many people need more than one session, and each may need its own approval. Ask the scheme coordinator to confirm in writing before the first one.
Are targeted therapy and immunotherapy covered?
Some cancer medicines are listed and others are not, and the list is revised from time to time. Ask whether your specific medicine is included, and for how long. If it is not, ask your oncologist about listed alternatives and about patient support programmes run by drug companies.
Can I use Aarogyasri for a liver transplant?
Transplant has at times been included for eligible families at licensed centres, but the rules change and few centres may accept it. Check with the transplant centre's scheme desk at the time. Our page on transplant cost explains what a transplant bill includes.
My card is from Andhra Pradesh. Can I use it in Hyderabad?
Andhra Pradesh's scheme has its own panel of hospitals, which has included some in Hyderabad. The rules are separate from Telangana's Aarogyasri. Ask the hospital's scheme desk whether they accept your card for the planned treatment before you travel.
What if treatment started before approval came?
Treatment begun before pre-authorisation is often not paid for by the scheme. If that has happened, speak to the hospital's scheme coordinator straight away and keep every report and bill. In an emergency, ask how emergency admission is handled under the scheme.
Does the scheme cover cancer that spread to the liver?
Cancer that spread to the liver from elsewhere is usually treated under the package for the original cancer, such as bowel or breast. The treatment and the package can therefore be different from primary liver cancer. Ask your oncologist which one applies and tell the scheme desk.
Can CION help with the scheme paperwork?
Yes. Our team can help you gather reports, write down the treatment plan and prepare the questions to ask. Whether a specific treatment can be done under the scheme, and where, depends on the package and the hospital. Call the helpline and we will check your case with you.
What moves the figure
What affects the cost
Four things change the total more than anything else.
The technique used
A shaped or image-guided delivery costs more than a conventional one, and is chosen on clinical grounds rather than preference.
How many sessions
The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.
Supporting tests
Scans, blood work and pathology done alongside treatment are billed separately.
Your cover
Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS or cashless insurance usually change the out-of-pocket figure substantially.
Paying for it
Insurance, schemes and payment
What you actually pay usually differs a great deal from the sticker figure.
