The cost of liver cancer surveillance in Hyderabad | CION Cancer Clinics
A liver surveillance check is usually an ultrasound and an AFP blood test every six months. Prices vary widely between Hyderabad centres, so ask for a written, itemised quote before you book. This page explains what you are paying for, what makes one bill higher than another, where you can save safely, and why skipping checks to save money usually costs far more later. At CION Cancer Clinics, our specialists help you understand your own risk and plan regular liver checks that fit it.

The short answer
How much does a liver surveillance check cost in Hyderabad?
A surveillance check is usually one liver ultrasound and one AFP blood test, repeated every six months. It is one of the cheaper things in liver care, but the price varies so much between centres that no honest single figure exists. Ask for a written, itemised quote before you book.
What you are actually paying for
The ultrasound looks at the liver for any new spot, or lesion. The AFP (alpha-fetoprotein, a protein some liver cancers release into the blood) is a simple blood test taken the same morning. Many people also have a liver function test and a blood count, so the doctor can see how well the liver is working. Then there is the consultation where someone reads all of it together.
Why the cost is worth weighing properly
Liver cancer found on surveillance is often small and curable. Found because of symptoms, it usually is not. The surveillance bill is small and regular. The bill for treating a cancer found late is large and arrives all at once. That is why this page talks about both.
This page is about surveillance for people with cirrhosis, hepatitis B or another known liver risk. If a scan has already found a spot, read what happens when a nodule is found instead. What moves the bill
Why does one centre charge more than another for the same check?
The test names on the bill look the same everywhere. What sits behind them does not.
Who does the ultrasound
A scan done by a radiologist who looks at livers every day costs more than a quick general abdominal scan. For a cirrhotic liver, which is lumpy and hard to read, that experience matters more than the price.
Which blood tests are added
AFP alone is cheap. Adding liver function tests, a blood count, a clotting test (INR) or a hepatitis B viral load raises the total. Your doctor decides which ones you need each time.
- Every visit: ultrasound and AFP
- Often: liver function and blood count
- Sometimes: viral load or clotting test
Package or separate bills
Some centres sell a surveillance package. Others bill each test separately. A package is only cheaper if it contains what your doctor actually asked for.
What happens after a finding
Most checks are normal. When one is not, the next step is a triple-phase CT or MRI, which costs far more and is quoted separately.
The cost of finding it late
What does liver cancer treatment cost if it is not caught early?
Surveillance tests are quoted by each centre. These are the treatment ranges CION already publishes, as 2026 Hyderabad estimates, so you can see what surveillance is protecting against.
Radiofrequency ablation
Often possible when a tumour is found small, on surveillance.
Liver resection, open
Removing part of the liver, when the liver is strong enough.
TACE, per session
Often repeated, and used when the tumour is larger or there are several.
Full multi-step treatment
Several treatments one after another, more common in cancers found late.
Indicative only, 2026 Hyderabad estimates. These are treatment costs, not surveillance costs. Procedures are coordinated through accredited partner hospitals. Insurance, Aarogyasri or Ayushman Bharat can change what you pay, and scheme rules change, so check at the time. Ask for a written, itemised estimate against your own cover.

Before you book
How do I get a clear price for surveillance?
Ask what your doctor wants each time
Get the list of tests in writing: ultrasound, AFP, and anything else. Then you are comparing like with like between centres.
Ask for an itemised quote
Ask each centre for the price of every line, and whether the doctor's review of the results is included or billed again.
Check your cover
Many insurance policies pay only for tests linked to a hospital stay. Ask your insurer whether outpatient scans are covered. Government scheme rules change, so ask the scheme desk rather than relying on a friend's experience.
Keep every report together
Your next scan is read against your last one. A folder of past reports saves repeat tests, and repeat tests are money. Our page on paperwork to keep from day one lists what to save.
Saving money safely
Where can I save on surveillance, and where should I not?
Being straight with you
What this page cannot tell you
It cannot give you the exact price at a particular centre this month. Test prices change, packages change and scheme rules change. Only a written quote from the place you book tells you that.
It cannot tell you how often you need checks
Six-monthly checks are the usual pattern for people with cirrhosis and for some people with hepatitis B. Your own interval is set by your doctor, based on your liver and your history. Our page on who needs liver cancer screening explains who qualifies.
Who this does not apply to
If you have a healthy liver and no hepatitis, routine liver cancer surveillance is not usually advised, and paying for it buys little. If your cancer started elsewhere, such as the bowel, and has spread to the liver, your scans are follow-up for that cancer, not surveillance. Your oncologist plans those differently.
At CION, a medical oncologist can review your past reports, plan your surveillance schedule and arrange the scans through diagnostic partners.Questions we are asked
Common questions about the cost of liver surveillance
Is an ultrasound alone enough to save money?
Ultrasound is the main test, and many guidelines pair it with AFP because each can catch what the other misses. Dropping AFP saves very little and removes a second check. Ask your doctor before leaving anything out, because the advice depends on your liver.
Does health insurance pay for surveillance scans?
It depends on the policy. Many policies pay only for tests connected to a hospital admission, and some offer limited outpatient cover. Call your insurer with the test names and ask in writing. This is general information, not advice on your policy.
Do Aarogyasri or Ayushman Bharat cover surveillance?
These schemes are built mainly around treatment and hospital stays, and what they include changes over time. Ask the scheme desk at the hospital what applies today. Our page on Aarogyasri cover explains how the scheme works in general.
Why does a CT or MRI suddenly cost so much more?
A triple-phase CT or liver MRI is a different test, used to look closely at a spot the ultrasound found. It needs contrast dye, a specialist scanner and a longer report. It is not part of routine surveillance and is quoted separately.
Can I do my checks in my district and see a doctor in Hyderabad?
Often yes, if the local radiologist is used to scanning livers. Bring every report and, where possible, the images on a disc. A specialist can then compare each scan with the last one without repeating it.
If money is tight, can I go once a year?
Stretching the gap gives a tumour more time to grow past the size where simpler treatment works. Talk to your doctor about cost honestly. There are usually safer ways to save, such as choosing one reliable centre and doing both tests in one trip.
Is a raised AFP a sign of cancer?
Not on its own. AFP can rise with active hepatitis, inflamed liver tissue and pregnancy. Many liver cancers never raise it at all. A raised result means your doctor will usually ask for a closer scan. It does not answer the question by itself.
How do I start surveillance with CION?
Call the helpline and say you want liver surveillance planned. Bring your hepatitis reports, any past scans and a list of medicines. A medical oncologist will set your schedule and CION arranges the scans through diagnostic partners.
What moves the figure
What affects the cost
Four things change the total more than anything else.
The technique used
A shaped or image-guided delivery costs more than a conventional one, and is chosen on clinical grounds rather than preference.
How many sessions
The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.
Supporting tests
Scans, blood work and pathology done alongside treatment are billed separately.
Your cover
Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS or cashless insurance usually change the out-of-pocket figure substantially.
Paying for it
Insurance, schemes and payment
What you actually pay usually differs a great deal from the sticker figure.
