The short answer

What are the symptoms of liver cancer, and are they usually cancer?

Liver cancer can cause pain under the right ribs, loss of appetite, weight loss, yellow eyes, a swollen belly and deep tiredness. Most people with these symptoms do not have liver cancer. Acidity, gallstones, fatty liver, viral hepatitis and ordinary infections cause the same complaints far more often.

Why this page carries Telugu words

Many families in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh describe symptoms in Telugu at home, and then meet English words on a report or in a hospital. This page is written in English for the son, daughter or relative who reads it, with the key Telugu words beside their English meaning, so the whole family can talk to the doctor in the same terms. A full Telugu edition of these pages is being prepared separately.

Which liver cancer this page is about

It is about primary liver cancer, which starts in the liver itself. Cancer that has spread to the liver from the bowel, breast or another organ is more common, and causes similar symptoms. If a report already says that, read about cancer in the liver that is not liver cancer.

Early liver cancer often causes no symptoms at all. Feeling well does not rule it out, and feeling unwell does not mean cancer.

Words in Telugu

What are the Telugu words for liver symptoms?

కాలేయం (kaalēyam)
The liver. Kaalēya cancer means liver cancer.
కామెర్లు (kaamerlu)
Jaundice: yellow eyes and skin, often with dark urine. Usually from hepatitis or gallstones, sometimes from a blocked bile duct.
కుడి పక్కటెముకల కింద నొప్పి
Pain under the right ribs, where the liver sits. Gallstones and acidity are common causes.
ఆకలి లేకపోవడం
Loss of appetite, or feeling full after a few bites.
బరువు తగ్గడం
Weight loss, especially when you are not trying to lose weight.
కడుపు ఉబ్బరం
A swollen or tight belly. When it is fluid, doctors call it ascites.
అలసట / దురద
Tiredness, and itching of the skin, which can come with jaundice.
కాలేయంలో గడ్డ
A lump in the liver, the phrase families often use for a lesion seen on a scan. Most lesions are not cancer, but each one needs the follow-up the doctor asks for.

Not sure whether this applies to you?

Ask an oncologist

Most are not cancer

What else causes these symptoms?

These are the everyday causes a doctor will think about first.

Acidity and gas

Burning or heaviness in the upper belly after meals, with burping. Very common, and often confused with liver pain.

Gallstones

Pain under the right ribs after oily food, sometimes reaching the shoulder blade. A stone blocking the bile duct can cause jaundice.

Viral hepatitis

Hepatitis A and E, from food or water, cause sudden jaundice and tiredness, and usually settle. Hepatitis B and C can be silent for years and need a test.

Fatty liver and cirrhosis

Fatty liver is very common and usually causes no pain. Long-standing liver damage, called cirrhosis, can cause a swollen belly and tiredness, and it raises the risk of liver cancer.

If you have cirrhosis or hepatitis B, ask about regular surveillance scans.
!
When to go to hospital today

Vomiting blood (రక్తపు వాంతులు), passing black tarry stools (నల్లటి మలం), new confusion or unusual drowsiness, or a fever with belly pain and swelling all need a hospital today. Go to the nearest emergency department now. Yellow eyes, a belly that keeps swelling, or weight loss you cannot explain need a doctor within the week, not after the festival or the harvest.

Leave a number, we will call you

One field. No form to fill in, and no charge for the call.

At the doctor

What will the doctor do to find the cause?

  1. Listen and examine

The doctor asks about your symptoms, alcohol, past jaundice and family history, and checks your belly, eyes and legs. Use the Telugu words above if they are easier.

  2. Blood tests

Liver function tests, a blood count and tests for hepatitis B and C. AFP, a blood marker that rises with some liver cancers, may be added. It is not a diagnosis by itself.

  3. An ultrasound

Usually the first scan. It shows gallstones, fatty liver and most lumps, and gives many families a clear answer.

  4. A detailed scan if needed

If a lump is not clearly harmless, a triple-phase CT or MRI follows. CION arranges these through partner diagnostic centres, and the tumour board reviews the images.

Commonly believed

Four things families say about liver symptoms

"Kaamerlu always goes away with home remedies or a nati vaidyam."

Some jaundice settles by itself, but jaundice can also come from a blocked bile duct or a tumour. Herbal treatments can harm a liver that is already damaged. Get a blood test and scan first, and tell the doctor anything you are taking.

"A liver patient must stop eating dal, eggs and meat."

Most people with liver disease need enough protein to stay strong. Cutting it out can cause muscle loss and weakness. Ask the doctor or dietitian before changing the diet.

"No pain means no problem."

Early liver cancer is often painless. That is why people with cirrhosis or hepatitis B are offered regular scans even when they feel well.

"Only people who drink get liver cancer."

Hepatitis B, hepatitis C, fatty liver and diabetes are common causes too. Risk factors are not fault, and nobody should be blamed for their liver.

Being straight with you

What this page cannot tell you

It cannot tell you whether your symptoms come from your liver, or whether they are cancer. The same complaint can come from a stomach problem, a stone or an infection, and only an examination, blood tests and sometimes a scan can sort that out. A doctor who has seen you, and your reports, is the right person to say.

Who this does not apply to

If you have one of the warning signs above, do not read further; go to hospital. If you already have a confirmed liver cancer, your questions are about stage, liver function and treatment, and the diagnosis pages will help more. Children are different too: liver tumours in children are covered on the hepatoblastoma page.

Talking to the doctor in your own language

You can describe symptoms in Telugu. Ask for any English word on a report to be explained, and write the explanation down for the family.

Bring every old report, even if it looks unrelated.

Questions we are asked

Common questions about liver cancer symptoms

What is liver cancer called in Telugu?

It is usually called కాలేయ క్యాన్సర్ (kaalēya cancer). Many families also say కాలేయంలో గడ్డ, a lump in the liver, for anything seen on a scan. A lump is not always cancer, so ask the doctor exactly what the report says and what the next step is.

What is the first sign of liver cancer?

Often there is none. Early liver cancer is usually found on a surveillance scan in someone with cirrhosis or hepatitis B. When symptoms appear, pain under the right ribs, poor appetite and weight loss are common, and all of them have many more ordinary causes.

Does jaundice mean liver cancer?

Usually not. Hepatitis and gallstones are far more common causes of kaamerlu. Jaundice still needs a blood test and usually a scan, and sudden jaundice with fever needs a hospital today. Read more about yellow eyes and jaundice.

Can fatty liver turn into cancer?

In a small share of people, fatty liver slowly leads to scarring and then cirrhosis, and that raises the risk. Most people with fatty liver never develop cancer. Weight control, diabetes control and regular check-ups help, and your doctor will tell you whether you need scans.

I have hepatitis B. What symptoms should I watch for?

Watch for the symptoms on this page, but do not rely on them. Hepatitis B is controlled, not removed, and a hepatologist or physician decides on antiviral tablets and how often you need checks. Family members should be tested and vaccinated. This is routine care, not blame.

Is pain on the right side always the liver?

No. The gallbladder, stomach, kidney, muscles and ribs all sit nearby, and the liver itself rarely hurts unless it is stretched. Note when the pain comes and what eases it, and tell your doctor. See pain in the upper right abdomen.

Which doctor should we see first?

A family doctor or general physician is a good start. If tests point to liver disease, you will see a hepatologist. If a tumour is suspected, an oncologist and a tumour board join in. CION medical oncologists can review reports and explain the next step.

Can I call CION and explain in Telugu?

Yes. You can describe the symptoms and the reports you have in Telugu or English, and someone will tell you which reports to send and whether a visit is needed. This can save a long trip from the districts. One helpline serves every CION centre.
