CION Cancer Clinics

Where TACE and Y-90 are available in Hyderabad | CION Cancer Clinics

TACE is offered in many large Hyderabad hospitals with an interventional radiology department. Y-90 is available in far fewer, because it also needs a nuclear medicine team. CION coordinates both through accredited partner hospitals after a tumour board decides whether either suits your tumour and your liver. This page explains what a centre needs, how the arrangement works and who these treatments do not suit. At CION Cancer Clinics, we explain costs in writing and help families from across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh plan treatment in Hyderabad.

The short answer

Can I get TACE or Y-90 in Hyderabad?

Yes. TACE is widely available in Hyderabad, in large hospitals with an interventional radiology department. Y-90, also called TARE or radioembolisation, is offered in far fewer places, because it needs a nuclear medicine team and a licence to handle radioactive material as well as an interventional radiologist.

How CION fits in

CION does not perform TACE or Y-90 itself. CION coordinates both through NABH-accredited partner hospitals. Your oncologist and the liver tumour board first decide whether either treatment suits your tumour and your liver, then arrange the procedure and stay in charge of your care before and after it.

Which liver cancer this page is about

This page is mainly about primary liver cancer, called hepatocellular carcinoma or HCC, which starts in the liver itself. If your cancer began in the bowel, breast or elsewhere and spread to the liver, the choices are different. For bowel cancer that has spread to the liver, the colon cancer pages cover your options.

Where a treatment is available matters less than whether it is the right treatment for you. That question comes first.

Behind the procedure

What does a hospital need to offer TACE or Y-90 safely?

A machine on its own is not enough. Both treatments depend on a team and on what happens before and after the day itself.

An interventional radiology room

Both treatments are given through a thin tube passed from the groin or wrist into the artery that feeds the tumour. This needs a special X-ray room called a cath lab or angiography suite.

Nuclear medicine, for Y-90 only

Y-90 uses tiny radioactive beads. The hospital must hold a licence to order, store and handle them, and must run a mapping scan beforehand to check that the beads will not travel to the lungs or gut.

Why Y-90 is rarer

  • The beads are imported and ordered for each patient
  • It needs two procedure days, not one
  • Fewer specialists have trained in it

A liver team around the procedure

A hepatologist to protect liver function, a surgeon who can say whether an operation is still possible, and an oncologist who decides what comes next if the tumour does not respond.

Ward care and follow-up scans

Many people stay in hospital overnight after TACE. A follow-up scan later shows whether the treatment worked and whether another session is needed.

Not sure whether this applies to you?

Ask an oncologist

Step by step

How does CION arrange TACE or Y-90 for you?

Your scans and reports are reviewed

Bring your triple-phase CT or MRI, your blood tests and any biopsy report. If the scan is old or unclear, CION arranges a fresh one through a diagnostic partner.

The tumour board discusses your case

Oncologists, surgeons and radiologists look at the size and number of tumours, the blood flow in the portal vein and how well your liver is working. They decide whether surgery, ablation, TACE, Y-90 or medicines suit you.

The procedure is booked at a partner hospital

If TACE or Y-90 is the plan, CION books it with an accredited partner hospital and sends your records ahead, so you do not repeat tests without reason.

You come back to CION afterwards

Your oncologist sees you after the procedure, manages pain, fever and tiredness, reads the follow-up scan with you and plans the next step.

Side by side

How do TACE and Y-90 differ in practice?

TACE Y-90 (TARE)
Chemotherapy and blocking particles go into the tumour's artery Tiny radioactive beads go into the tumour's artery
Offered in many large Hyderabad hospitals Offered in only a few, and booked ahead
Usually one procedure day, often with an overnight stay A mapping day first, then the treatment day
Often repeated in several sessions Often given once to each part of the liver
CION publishes an indicative cost range Cost is quoted separately and is usually higher

Commonly believed

What do families often assume about finding a centre?

"Y-90 is newer, so it must be better than TACE."

Neither is better for everyone. The choice depends on the size and spread of the tumour, the portal vein and your liver function. For many people TACE is the right first choice. See how the choice is made.

"We should go to whichever hospital can do it soonest."

Speed matters, but a careful tumour board review first can show that surgery or ablation is possible instead. A few days spent on the right plan is rarely time lost.

"If Hyderabad cannot do Y-90 for us, we must travel to another city."

Y-90 is available in Hyderabad. When it is not suitable, the reason is usually the liver or the tumour, not the city. Travelling will not change that answer.

"Once TACE is done, we do not need the oncologist."

The follow-up scan, further sessions and any medicines all need planning. Staying with one team keeps those decisions joined up.

Being straight with you

Who does this not suit, and what can this page not tell you?

TACE and Y-90 are not safe for everyone. People whose liver is already failing, with deep jaundice or a lot of fluid in the abdomen, can be harmed by them. Cancer that has spread well outside the liver is usually treated with medicines instead, such as immunotherapy or targeted tablets. A small single tumour may be better treated with surgery or ablation.

It cannot tell you which centre to choose

This page does not rank hospitals or name them. The right place depends on your tumour, your scheme or insurance, how far you travel and whether the procedure is planned within a full liver team.

It cannot give you a price for Y-90

Costs depend on the hospital, the number of sessions and the beads used. Ask for a written, itemised estimate, and read the TACE cost page for the range CION publishes.

If you are unsure whether either treatment is right for you, call the helpline. Someone will arrange a review of your scans.

Questions we are asked

Common questions about TACE and Y-90 in Hyderabad

Does CION do TACE itself?

No. CION coordinates TACE and Y-90 through NABH-accredited partner hospitals with interventional radiology. CION's oncologists and tumour board decide whether you need it, arrange it, and look after you before and after. Your team will tell you where the procedure takes place.

Is Y-90 available in Hyderabad?

Yes, though in fewer hospitals than TACE. It needs a nuclear medicine licence, imported beads ordered for each patient and a mapping scan beforehand. Because of this it is booked ahead, and your team will plan the dates with you.

How do I know whether I need TACE or Y-90?

A tumour board looks at your scans, the number and size of tumours, the portal vein and your liver blood tests. Sometimes neither is the right choice and surgery, ablation or medicines are offered instead. Bring all your reports so the review is complete.

Can I have TACE under Aarogyasri or Ayushman Bharat?

Some empanelled hospitals cover TACE under these schemes, but the rules and the list of hospitals change. Check with the scheme desk at the time. CION's team can help with the paperwork. See the empanelled centres page.

Will I need to stay in hospital?

Many people stay overnight after TACE so that pain, fever and nausea can be managed. Y-90 is often done as a day procedure after the mapping day. The hospital doing the procedure will tell you what to expect and what to bring.

I live outside Hyderabad. How many trips will this take?

Usually one visit for the review, one for the procedure and later visits for the follow-up scan. Y-90 adds a mapping day. Ask your team to group appointments where it is safe, so travel from the districts is kept to a minimum.

Can TACE or Y-90 be used before a transplant or surgery?

Yes, in some people. They can hold a tumour in check while someone waits for a transplant, or shrink it so that an operation becomes possible. This is decided by the tumour board together with the transplant or surgical team.

Can I get a second opinion before booking TACE?

Yes, and it is often worth it. A second review can confirm the plan or show another option. Bring your scan images on a disc, not only the printed report. Call the CION helpline to arrange a second opinion.
