Cirrhosis (కాలేయం గట్టిపడటం): a guide for Telugu families | CION Cancer Clinics

Cirrhosis means the liver has been scarred and hardened by years of damage, which Telugu families often call కాలేయం గట్టిపడటం. It is not cancer by itself, but it is the main ground in which liver cancer grows. This guide explains it in plain English, with the Telugu words you will need beside each one, so you can talk it through at home. At CION Cancer Clinics, our specialists help you understand your own risk and plan regular liver checks that fit it.

The short answer

What is cirrhosis, in words the whole family can follow?

Cirrhosis means the liver has been hurt for so long that scar tissue has replaced much of the soft, working liver. In Telugu, families often call it కాలేయం గట్టిపడటం, the liver becoming hard. That is a fair description. A scarred liver is firmer, smaller and less able to do its work.

Why a cancer clinic writes about it

Most primary liver cancer, the kind that starts in the liver itself, grows in a liver that already has cirrhosis. The scarring is part of the cause. It is also the limit on treatment, because doctors can only do as much to the tumour as the remaining liver can survive. No other cancer works quite this way.

Who this page is for

This page is written in English for the son, daughter or spouse who reads English and will explain things to the rest of the family. The key Telugu words sit beside their English meaning, so you can use them when you talk to your parents. If the scan said cancer has spread to the liver from the bowel, breast or elsewhere, that is a different illness, and the page on what cirrhosis is will not apply to it in the same way.

Cirrhosis is a stage of liver damage. It is not, by itself, cancer.

Words to share

Which Telugu words will the doctor and the family use?

కాలేయం
The liver. The large organ under the right ribs that cleans the blood, makes proteins and stores energy.
కాలేయం గట్టిపడటం
Cirrhosis. The liver has become hard and scarred after years of damage.
కామెర్లు
Jaundice. Yellow eyes and skin, because the liver cannot clear a yellow pigment called bilirubin.
కడుపులో నీరు
Fluid in the belly, which doctors call ascites. The abdomen swells and feels tight.
కాళ్ళ వాపు
Swelling of the feet and legs, often from low albumin, a protein the liver makes.
రక్తపు వాంతులు
Vomiting blood. This can come from varices, swollen veins in the food pipe. It needs hospital the same day.
కాలేయ క్యాన్సర్
Liver cancer. The report may say hepatocellular carcinoma, or HCC, which is the main type that grows in a cirrhotic liver.

Not sure whether this applies to you?

Ask an oncologist

Where it comes from

What causes cirrhosis, and does it mean someone did wrong?

Cirrhosis has several causes, and many people have more than one. None of them is a matter of blame.

Hepatitis B and C

Long-standing infection with these viruses is a major cause in Telangana and Andhra. Hepatitis B often passes from mother to baby at birth, long before anyone knew. Hepatitis B is controlled with tablets. Hepatitis C is curable with modern tablets.

Fatty liver

Fat building up in the liver, linked to diabetes and weight around the waist. Families call it కొవ్వు కాలేయం. It is now a leading cause in people who never drank.

Alcohol

Regular drinking over many years scars the liver. Stopping at any point still helps. Please tell the doctor honestly how much was drunk, because it changes the plan.

Less common causes

  • Autoimmune hepatitis
  • Too much iron or copper in the body
  • Long-term bile duct disease

The page cirrhosis does not mean you did something wrong is a good one to show an elder who feels ashamed.

!
Go to hospital today, not tomorrow

Go to the nearest hospital emergency department today if a person with cirrhosis vomits blood or something like coffee grounds, passes black, sticky stools, becomes newly confused or unusually drowsy, or has fever or belly pain while there is fluid in the abdomen. Sudden yellow eyes with fever also needs hospital today. In Telugu, say రక్తపు వాంతులు, నల్లటి మలం or గందరగోళం at the desk. These are emergencies, and waiting at home makes them more dangerous.

Leave a number, we will call you

One field. No form to fill in, and no charge for the call.

After the diagnosis

What will the doctors check once cirrhosis is found?

How well the liver still works

Blood tests for bilirubin, albumin and INR, a clotting test, show how much work the liver can still do. Doctors combine them into a Child-Pugh grade, a simple scale of liver strength.

Whether it is compensated

Compensated means the liver is scarred but coping, often with no symptoms. Decompensated means problems like fluid, jaundice or confusion have appeared. Read more on compensated and decompensated cirrhosis.

Treating the cause

A hepatologist or physician treats hepatitis, helps with stopping alcohol and manages diabetes. Removing the cause can slow the damage and sometimes improve the liver.

Regular liver cancer checks

Most people with cirrhosis are advised an ultrasound every six months, often with an AFP blood test, to find any cancer while it is small. See the six-monthly ultrasound. CION arranges these scans through diagnostic partners.

Commonly believed

Four things families say about cirrhosis, and what is true

"Cirrhosis only happens to people who drink."

Many people with cirrhosis have never touched alcohol. Hepatitis B, hepatitis C and fatty liver are common causes here. Assuming alcohol hurts the patient and can delay testing other family members for hepatitis.

"He has a liver problem, so stop giving him dal, eggs and chicken."

People with cirrhosis usually need enough protein, not less. Cutting protein causes muscle loss and weakness. Ask the doctor or a dietitian before changing the diet, and keep salt low if there is fluid.

"A herbal liver tonic will clean the liver."

A scarred liver is easily harmed by herbs, tonics and powders, and some cause serious liver injury. Tell the doctor about everything being taken, without fear of being scolded.

"He feels fine, so there is no need for scans."

Early liver cancer causes no pain or symptoms. Feeling well is exactly when regular scans do the most good, because a small tumour has far more treatment choices.

Being straight with you

What can this page not tell your family?

It cannot tell you how advanced your relative's cirrhosis is, or whether a spot on their scan is cancer. Those answers come from the blood tests, the scans and the doctor who has examined them. It also cannot say how long anyone will live. That depends on many things a general page cannot see.

Who this does not apply to

If the report says fatty liver without scarring, or mild fibrosis, this is not cirrhosis yet, and the outlook and advice are different. If cancer has spread to the liver from another organ, the plan is decided by that cancer. Children with liver tumours are looked after on the hepatoblastoma page.

Where to go next

Bring every report, scan disc and medicine strip to the consultation. If a liver cancer is found, the CION tumour board reviews the scan and the liver tests together, and a hepatologist stays involved for the liver itself. The Telugu liver cancer glossary has more words to share at home.

A full Telugu edition of this page is being prepared separately.

Questions we are asked

Common questions about cirrhosis from Telugu families

Is cirrhosis the same as liver cancer?

No. Cirrhosis is scarring of the liver. Liver cancer is a tumour. Cirrhosis raises the chance of liver cancer, which is why regular scans are advised, but many people with cirrhosis never develop cancer. Your doctor will explain where your relative stands after seeing their tests.

Can cirrhosis get better?

The scarring usually does not disappear, but treating the cause can stop it getting worse, and in some people the liver improves. Controlling hepatitis B, curing hepatitis C, stopping alcohol and losing weight around the waist all help. A hepatologist can tell you what is realistic for your relative.

How do I explain cirrhosis to my parents in Telugu?

Many families say కాలేయం గట్టిపడటం, the liver becoming hard. You can explain that the liver is tired and scarred, that the doctor will look after it, and that regular scans are to catch any new problem early. Keep the words simple and avoid blame.

Should the family be tested for hepatitis?

If the cirrhosis is caused by hepatitis B or C, yes. Hepatitis B often runs in families, passed from mother to baby or within the household. A simple blood test helps, and household members who are not protected can be vaccinated against hepatitis B. Testing is about protecting people, not finding fault.

What food should a person with cirrhosis eat?

Usually normal, home-cooked meals with enough protein, such as dal, eggs, milk and fish if eaten. Small meals and a late-evening snack can help. Salt is often reduced when there is fluid. Alcohol should stop completely. Ask for a dietitian's advice before cutting any food group.

Which medicines are risky with cirrhosis?

Some common painkillers, sleeping tablets and herbal products can harm a scarred liver or cause confusion. Never start a new medicine from a shop without asking. Our page on medicines to avoid with cirrhosis explains the main ones to ask about.

If cancer is found, can it be treated with cirrhosis?

Often yes, especially if the tumour is small and the liver is still working well. Treatment depends on the size of the tumour, how strong the liver is and how fit the person is. The tumour board weighs all three together. A weak liver limits the choices, which is why early detection matters.

Do we have to travel to Hyderabad for every check?

Not always. Many routine blood tests and some scans can be done closer to home, as long as the results and images reach the treating team. Ask which tests must be done at a particular centre. Call the CION helpline to plan visits around district travel.
