The short answer

Can liver cancer care be arranged in Vizag, Srikakulam or Vizianagaram?

Yes, a large part of it. Consultations, second opinions, medicines given as tablets or a drip, blood tests and follow-up can usually be planned close to home in north Andhra. Procedures such as TACE, ablation, liver surgery and a transplant are coordinated through partner hospitals, and your team will tell you where each one takes place.

Check which liver cancer the report describes

Many people told about "a growth in the liver" have cancer that began in another organ, such as the bowel or the breast, and spread there. That is secondary liver cancer, and it is treated as the original cancer. This page is about cancer that starts in the liver itself. If the report is not clear, read the two very different things called liver cancer before anything else.

What CION offers in north Andhra

CION has centres in Visakhapatnam and in the neighbouring districts. Immunotherapy, targeted therapy, chemotherapy, symptom care and follow-up can be planned at the one nearest you. Cases are discussed at the multidisciplinary tumour board, so a patient in Srikakulam has the same specialists looking at the scans as a patient in the city.

Ask the helpline which centre is nearest and on which days the oncologist sees patients there.

Near home or further away

Which steps stay local and which need travel?

The split below is the usual pattern. Your own plan may differ, so ask the team to confirm it in writing.

Usually close to home

Talking through the diagnosis and the choices. Medicines given in day care or taken as tablets at home. Reviews before each treatment, blood tests and help with side effects.

  • Consultations and second opinions
  • Immunotherapy, targeted therapy and chemotherapy
  • Symptom care and follow-up

Scans and biopsy through partners

A triple-phase CT (pictures taken at three moments after a dye injection), a liver MRI, a PET-CT or a biopsy. CION arranges these through accredited diagnostic partners, often in Visakhapatnam.

Procedures through partner hospitals

TACE (medicine delivered through the artery feeding the tumour), ablation (destroying a small tumour with a heated needle), liver resection, radiation and transplant assessment. CION coordinates these through NABH-accredited partner hospitals. The place depends on the procedure, and some may mean a trip to Hyderabad.

Liver care alongside

Cirrhosis, hepatitis B and hepatitis C are managed by a hepatologist or physician at the same time as the cancer. Keep taking any hepatitis B medicine unless that doctor says otherwise.

Not sure whether this applies to you?

Ask an oncologist

How it usually runs

What happens after you first call from north Andhra?

Collect what you already have

Every scan report with the images on a CD or link, blood tests and any biopsy report. Many families arrive with a folder from more than one hospital. Bring all of it, even the old reports.

A first consultation near home

The oncologist takes the history, examines the patient and checks how well the liver is working. If travel is hard, a video consultation can sometimes come first.

The tumour board looks at the scans

Oncologists, surgeons, radiologists and liver specialists review the case together. If a clearer scan or a biopsy is needed, CION arranges it through a partner.

A written plan that names the travel

You are told which steps happen near home and which need a journey, so the family can plan leave, money and a place to stay.

Back home for follow-up

After any procedure, reviews and repeat scans are usually planned closer to home again. The tumour board keeps the case in view, so the plan can change quickly if a scan shows something new.

Before the first visit

What should we carry to the first appointment?

  • All scan reports, with the images on a CD, pen drive or online link
  • Recent liver function tests, AFP, blood counts and clotting results
  • Any biopsy report, and the name of the laboratory that holds the slides
  • Every medicine taken, including herbal or Ayurvedic liver tonics
  • Hepatitis B or C reports and any antiviral prescription
  • State health scheme, Ayushman Bharat, CGHS, ECHS or insurance cards
  • One family member who can write things down and ask questions

Leave a number, we will call you

One field. No form to fill in, and no charge for the call.

Side by side

Does this step mean leaving the district?

Usually near home Usually a planned journey
Consultations, second opinions and reviews TACE, TARE or ablation by an interventional radiologist
Immunotherapy and targeted therapy in day care Liver resection, where part of the liver is removed
Blood tests and side-effect checks Radiation such as SBRT, a precise high-dose beam
Regular ultrasound surveillance for people at risk Transplant assessment at a licensed transplant centre

Being straight with you

What this page cannot tell you

It cannot tell you which treatment is right for your liver cancer. That depends on how many tumours there are and how big they are, how well the liver is working and how fit the patient is. Only a team that has seen the scans and the blood results can answer that. It also cannot promise that every step stays local, because some plans need more travel than others.

Who this page does not apply to

If the cancer began in the bowel and spread to the liver, the colon cancer pages are the right place. Liver tumours in children are covered under hepatoblastoma in children. Gallbladder cancer has its own pages.

When not to wait for an appointment

Vomiting blood, black stools, new confusion or drowsiness, or fever with a swollen belly need a hospital today. Go to the nearest emergency department first, in your own district. Do not set out on a long journey to reach a particular doctor.

Schemes, timings and centre days change. Check them with the helpline before you travel.

Questions we are asked

Common questions from families in north Andhra

Is liver cancer treatment available in Vizag?

Consultations, second opinions, medicines given as a drip or tablets, symptom care and follow-up can be planned at CION centres in Visakhapatnam. Procedures such as TACE, ablation and surgery are coordinated through partner hospitals. Your team will tell you where each step of your plan takes place.

We live in Srikakulam. Do we have to travel for every visit?

Usually not. Many reviews, blood tests and treatments given as medicines can be planned at the nearest centre. Journeys are needed mainly for procedures and some scans. Ask for the travel to be written into the plan, so you know before treatment starts.

Can we get a second opinion by sending reports?

Often, yes. Send the scan images, blood tests and any biopsy report, and an oncologist can review them and speak to you by video or at a centre. Some questions still need the patient examined in person, and the team will tell you plainly if that applies.

Can immunotherapy be given near Vizianagaram?

Immunotherapy and targeted therapy are given at CION centres, so once the plan is set they can often be given closer to home. Blood tests before each treatment can be done locally too. Your oncologist will confirm the centre and the days for your treatment.

What if he vomits blood at night?

Go to the nearest hospital with an emergency department today. Vomiting blood or passing black stools can come from swollen veins in the food pipe and needs urgent treatment. Tell the cancer team afterwards. Do not start a long journey to reach the treating doctor first.

Do state schemes cover treatment in Andhra Pradesh?

The Andhra Pradesh state health scheme and Ayushman Bharat cover listed treatments at empanelled hospitals. Names, lists and rules change, so check them at the time of treatment. Bring the card to the first visit and the team will help with the paperwork.

Can surveillance scans be done in our town?

Usually, yes. People with cirrhosis or hepatitis B are advised to have a liver ultrasound regularly, and a good local scan centre can do it. Keep to the schedule and send each report to the same team. See surveillance in a small town.

Can the consultation be in Telugu?

Ask the helpline when you book if you need the consultation in Telugu or another language. Bringing a family member who can take notes helps too, because a lot is said in a first appointment and it is easy to forget the details once you are home.

Your Specialists

Meet CION's liver cancer specialists. Bring your scan reports and liver blood tests.

Our medical and surgical oncologists plan liver cancer care together, weighing the tumour and how well your liver works before choosing surgery, a liver-directed procedure or medicines.
