The cost of AFP and liver marker tests in Hyderabad | CION Cancer Clinics

An AFP blood test is one of the cheaper tests in liver care, and most Hyderabad laboratories offer it. Prices vary by laboratory, package and home collection, so ask for a written figure first. The bigger costs usually come from the scans a result leads to. This page explains what moves the bill, when the test is worth it, and how to avoid paying twice. At CION Cancer Clinics, our team goes through your scan, blood test and biopsy reports with you and plans the next step.

The short answer

How much does an AFP test cost in Hyderabad?

An AFP blood test is one of the cheaper tests in liver care, and most laboratories in Hyderabad offer it. The exact price varies by laboratory, by whether it is booked alone or in a package, and by whether a sample is collected from home, so ask for a written price before the sample is taken. The test itself is rarely the expensive part. What follows a result usually is.

Why we do not print a single figure

Laboratory prices in the city change often, differ between neighbourhoods and are discounted in packages. Any one number on this page would be wrong for many readers within months. Instead, this page explains what you are paying for, what moves the bill and how to avoid paying twice.

Who this page is for

It is for people asked to do AFP as part of liver cancer surveillance, as a check after treatment, or because a scan showed something in the liver. If you are a healthy person thinking of testing out of worry, read should healthy people test tumour markers first. You may not need to spend anything at all.

AFP is cheap. Repeating it in the wrong person, or reading it without a scan, is what costs money.

Relative cost

Which liver blood tests cost more, and which cost less?

These are rough bands to help you compare, not prices. Ask the laboratory or the hospital for a written figure.

Usually low

AFP on its own

A routine blood test offered by most laboratories. Results usually come back quickly.

Low to moderate

Liver function tests and blood counts

Often done with AFP. They tell the doctor how well the liver is working, which matters as much as the marker.

Higher, quoted separately

AFP-L3, DCP and combined scores

Specialist markers offered by fewer laboratories. Sometimes the sample is sent out of the city, which adds cost and time.

Indicative only, written for Hyderabad in 2026. Prices differ by laboratory, package and collection method. Insurance cover for outpatient blood tests varies by policy, and scheme rules change, so check your own cover at the time. Call the helpline for help reading an estimate.

What changes the price

What makes a marker test cost more or less?

Which laboratory runs it

Hospital laboratories, standalone chains and smaller local laboratories all price differently. An accredited laboratory with quality checks matters more than the cheapest option, because the same laboratory each time makes trends easier to read.

Alone or in a package

Packages can look good value but often bundle markers for other cancers that are not useful for liver surveillance. Paying for tests you do not need is not a saving.

Home collection and urgency

Home sample collection and same-day reports may carry a small extra charge. For a family travelling from a district, this can still be cheaper than a trip to the city.

What comes after the result

The real cost lies in the follow-up. A raised AFP often leads to a triple-phase CT or MRI, and sometimes a biopsy. These are quoted separately and cost far more than the blood test.

Costs that follow a raised value

  • A repeat AFP to confirm the trend
  • A liver scan, arranged through a diagnostic partner
  • A specialist review of the scan and the result

Leave a number, we will call you

One field. No form to fill in, and no charge for the call.

Spending wisely

How do I avoid paying for the same test twice?

Ask why the test is ordered

Before paying, ask what the result will change. If the answer is unclear, the test may not be needed. For surveillance, AFP is usually paired with an ultrasound.

Use the same laboratory each time

Different laboratories use slightly different methods. A small change between two of them can look like a rise when it is not, and lead to a repeat test. Our page on why the AFP trend matters more than one value explains this.

Carry every old report

Keep earlier AFP values, liver tests and scan reports in one folder or on your phone. A doctor who can see the trend may not need to repeat anything.

Ask for a written, itemised estimate

For anything beyond the blood test, such as scans or a biopsy, ask for a written estimate that lists each item. Our page on the cost of diagnosis covers those steps.

Side by side

When is an AFP test money well spent?

Usually worth it Usually not worth it
Planned surveillance with cirrhosis, beside an ultrasound A healthy adult with normal liver tests, out of worry
Follow-up after liver cancer treatment, if AFP was raised before After treatment, if AFP was never raised by that tumour
A new liver lesion on a scan, to help the team plan Repeated within days, without a doctor asking for it
Some hepatitis B carriers, as your doctor advises As part of a general full-body marker package

Being straight with you

What this page cannot tell you

It cannot give you a price for a particular laboratory, and it cannot tell you what your insurer or scheme will pay. Outpatient blood tests are treated differently across policies. Aarogyasri and Ayushman Bharat mainly cover treatment packages in hospital, and what they include is revised from time to time. Ask the scheme desk or your insurer, and get the answer in writing.

It cannot read your result

An AFP value means little without your liver history and a scan. A raised value is often not cancer, and a normal one does not rule it out. Our pages on what a high AFP means and on the common harmless causes are a better next step than searching the number.

Who this page does not apply to

If you are on systemic treatment or have just had a procedure, your blood tests are part of the treatment plan, and their cost is usually discussed with the team that runs it. CION can review a marker result alongside your scans and help you plan what to spend next.

Questions we are asked

Common questions about the cost of AFP and marker tests

Is AFP an expensive test?

No. AFP is a routine blood test and among the cheaper tests in liver care. Prices differ between laboratories and packages, so ask for the figure before the sample is drawn. The larger costs usually come from scans or a biopsy that a raised result may lead to.

Do I need a doctor's prescription for AFP?

Many laboratories will run it without one, but that is not a good reason to do it alone. A result read without your liver history and a scan can mislead you either way. It is better to test when a doctor has said what the number will change.

Does insurance cover AFP tests?

It depends on your policy. Some cover outpatient tests, others cover them only around a hospital stay. Read your policy or ask your insurer, and keep the doctor's request and the bill. Rules change, so check at the time rather than relying on what applied before.

Are AFP-L3 and DCP worth paying extra for?

For most people, not routinely. They are mainly used by specialists in particular situations, and fewer laboratories offer them. Ask your doctor whether the result would change your plan. Our page on AFP-L3 and DCP explains when they are used.

Can I get the test done near my home in a district town?

Usually yes. AFP is widely available. The main thing is to keep using the same laboratory where you can, and to send the reports to the team that follows your liver. That avoids a repeat test when you next travel to Hyderabad.

Why was I asked to repeat my AFP?

Usually to see the direction it is moving. One value can be misleading. A repeat test, ideally at the same laboratory, tells the doctor whether it is stable, falling or rising. That is worth the small extra cost, because it may avoid a scan.

Is a marker package cheaper than separate tests?

Sometimes per test, but packages often include markers for other cancers that add nothing to liver care. If you only need AFP and liver tests, paying for those alone is usually the better choice.

Can CION help me plan these tests?

Yes. The team can review your reports, tell you which tests are worth doing and arrange blood tests and scans through diagnostic partners. We can also help you get a written estimate. Call the helpline to start.

What moves the figure

What affects the cost

Four things change the total more than anything else.

The technique used

A shaped or image-guided delivery costs more than a conventional one, and is chosen on clinical grounds rather than preference.

How many sessions

The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.

Supporting tests

Scans, blood work and pathology done alongside treatment are billed separately.

Your cover

Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS or cashless insurance usually change the out-of-pocket figure substantially.

Paying for it

Insurance, schemes and payment

What you actually pay usually differs a great deal from the sticker figure.
