CION Cancer Clinics
Travel and stay costs when you come to Hyderabad for liver cancer treatment | CION Cancer Clinics
For outstation families, travel and stay add a real cost on top of the hospital bill, and schemes or insurance rarely cover it. The total depends mostly on how many trips the plan needs and how long each stay lasts. This page explains what drives those costs, where families usually stay, and how to plan visits with the team so fewer trips do the same work. At CION Cancer Clinics, we explain costs in writing and help families from across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh plan treatment in Hyderabad.

The short answer
How much does it cost to travel and stay in Hyderabad for liver cancer treatment?
For many outstation families, travel and stay add a real share on top of the hospital bill, and almost none of it is covered by insurance or schemes. The total depends far more on how many trips the plan needs and how long each stay lasts than on the room you choose. Planning the schedule with the team is the biggest saving.
Why liver cancer means more trips
Liver cancer care is rarely one visit. A family from Warangal, Nalgonda, Kurnool or Srikakulam may need trips for scans, the tumour board review, a procedure such as TACE (blocking the tumour's blood supply and delivering medicine into it), checks afterwards and repeat scans. Tablets or infusions can mean regular visits for months. Care for the liver itself, such as draining fluid, adds more.
What the money actually goes on
Bus or train fares for the patient and at least one companion. A room or bed nearby. Food outside home. Local autos and cabs across the city. Lost daily wages for the person who comes along. For a family that earns by the day, that last item is often the largest.
This page covers the costs outside the hospital. For the treatment bill itself, see liver cancer treatment cost in Hyderabad. What moves the total
What makes travel and stay costs go up or down?
The treatment type
A procedure such as ablation or TACE usually means a short hospital stay and a check soon after. Surgery means a longer stay and a recovery period near the city. Systemic therapy means repeated trips over many months.
How tests are grouped
When scans, blood tests and the consultation fall on one or two days, one trip does the work of three. Ask the team to group them.
Results that arrive late can force a second journey. Ask whether a report can be shared by phone or message instead.
The companion
Someone should travel with the patient, especially after a procedure. Their fare, food and lost wages count too.
Worth weighing
- Which relative can take leave most easily
- Whether one person can stay while another goes home
- Who will manage medicines at home
What can happen near home
Some blood tests and routine checks can be done at a local laboratory, with results sent to the team. Ask which visits truly need Hyderabad.

Before you travel
How do you plan a treatment trip so it costs less?
Ask for the schedule in writing
Find out which days need you in Hyderabad and which tests can be grouped. Ask how long you must stay nearby after a procedure.
Check concessions
Railways and some state bus services have offered concessions for cancer patients. The rules change, so check the current ones and carry the doctor's certificate. Our page on travel concessions explains how they work.
Book the stay early
Rest houses fill up. Ask the hospital help desk or social worker about places nearby. See accommodation near cancer hospitals.
Pack the paperwork
Carry every report, scan disc, medicine list, scheme card and insurance paper. A missing report can mean a second trip.
Keep bus and train tickets, lodging receipts and pharmacy bills in one folder. Some employers, trusts and tax rules ask for them later, and a lost receipt cannot be claimed.
If someone with liver cancer or cirrhosis vomits blood, passes black stools, becomes newly confused or very drowsy, or has a fever or pain with a swollen belly, go to hospital today. Go to the nearest emergency department, even if it is not in Hyderabad. Do not wait for the planned appointment or for cheaper travel the next day.
Being straight with you
What this page cannot tell you
It cannot give you a total for your family. Fares, room rates and the number of trips vary too much from one plan and one district to the next. The schedule from your treating team is the only sound starting point, and it can change as treatment goes on.
It cannot tell you what a scheme will pay
Most schemes and policies cover the hospital, not the journey or the room. A few employers, trusts and charities help with travel. Rules change, and this is general information, not advice on your entitlement. Ask the scheme desk, your employer or the hospital social worker.
Who this does not apply to
If you live in Hyderabad, most of this does not apply. If a liver transplant is planned, the stay near the transplant centre is much longer and follows that centre's rules. Ask them directly. For the wider costs of care, read reducing costs without compromising treatment.
If travel cost is the reason you are thinking of missing a visit, tell the team first. There is often a way to reorganise it.Questions we are asked
Common questions about travel and stay for treatment
Does insurance or Aarogyasri pay for travel and stay?
Usually not. Schemes and most policies cover hospital treatment, not bus fares or lodging. Some policies include a small daily allowance or an ambulance cover, and some employers help. Read your policy papers and ask the insurer, because the details differ.
How long do we need to stay in Hyderabad after TACE?
It varies with the person and the procedure. Many people stay in hospital briefly and are checked again soon after. Ask the team before you book, so you know whether to plan for a short stay or a longer one nearby. See hospital stay after liver surgery for surgery.
Can follow-up visits be done closer to home?
Some can. Blood tests are often done at a local laboratory and the results sent to the team. Scans and treatment decisions usually need the reports reviewed by the specialist team. Ask which visits can move and which cannot.
Is it safe for the patient to travel by bus or train?
Most people can travel to routine visits. After a procedure, ask the team when travel is safe and whether a seated journey is fine. Carry medicines, water, reports and a phone number for the team. Someone should always travel with the patient.
Are there low-cost rest houses for cancer patients in Hyderabad?
Some trusts and charities run rest houses for patients and families, at low or no charge. Places are limited and rules vary. The hospital social worker or help desk usually knows what is currently open. Ask early, before the date you travel.
Should the whole family come for the first visit?
One or two people who will make decisions is enough. Others can join by phone or video. Bringing more people adds to fares and food without changing what the doctor can tell you. Write down questions from the family beforehand.
Does CION arrange accommodation?
CION does not run its own accommodation. The team can help you plan visits so tests are grouped, and can point you to the help desks and social workers who know local options. Your treatment schedule is the most useful thing we can give you.
Who can help us plan the trip?
Start with the treating team for the schedule and the help desk for the stay. If you are not sure where to begin, call the CION helpline. Someone will explain what to bring and which days you will need to be in Hyderabad.
What moves the figure
What affects the cost
Four things change the total more than anything else.
The technique used
A shaped or image-guided delivery costs more than a conventional one, and is chosen on clinical grounds rather than preference.
How many sessions
The total is driven by the number of sittings or cycles, not by a single per-visit figure.
Supporting tests
Scans, blood work and pathology done alongside treatment are billed separately.
Your cover
Aarogyasri, CGHS, ECHS, EHS or cashless insurance usually change the out-of-pocket figure substantially.
Paying for it
Insurance, schemes and payment
What you actually pay usually differs a great deal from the sticker figure.
