The short answer

Can liver cancer be treated without moving to Hyderabad?

Much of it can. Consultations, tablets and drips given into a vein, blood tests and follow-up can usually happen close to Karimnagar, Nizamabad or Nalgonda. Procedures such as TACE, ablation, surgery and a transplant usually mean a planned trip to a partner hospital, most often in Hyderabad.

First, which liver cancer is this?

Many people told about "a spot on the liver" have cancer that began somewhere else, such as the bowel, and spread to the liver. That is secondary liver cancer, and it is treated as the original cancer. This page is about cancer that starts in the liver itself. If you are not sure which one your report describes, read the two very different things called liver cancer first.

What CION offers in these districts

CION has centres in and around these towns. Your consultations, second opinions, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, chemotherapy, symptom care and follow-up can be planned at the one nearest you. The helpline will tell you which centre that is and which days the oncologist sees patients there.

Fewer trips means less lost work and less strain on the person who travels with the patient. It does not mean lesser care.

Near home or in the city

Which parts of liver cancer care happen where?

Every plan is different, but the split usually falls the same way. Ask your team to confirm it for your plan.

Usually close to home

Talking through the diagnosis, the treatment decision and what comes next. Medicines given as tablets or as a drip in day care. Regular reviews, blood tests and help with side effects.

  • Consultations and second opinions
  • Immunotherapy, targeted therapy and chemotherapy
  • Symptom care and follow-up visits

Arranged through partners

Liver scans such as a triple-phase CT (a CT taken at three moments after a dye injection) or a liver MRI, and a biopsy if one is needed. CION arranges these through accredited diagnostic partners, sometimes in the district and sometimes in the city.

Usually a planned trip

TACE (medicine delivered through the blood vessel feeding the tumour), ablation (burning the tumour with a needle), liver surgery, radiation and a transplant. CION coordinates these through NABH-accredited partner hospitals. Your team will tell you where each one takes place.

Shared with a liver doctor

Care for cirrhosis, hepatitis B or hepatitis C runs alongside cancer treatment. A hepatologist or physician manages it, often near home. The cancer team and the liver doctor share reports, so neither one is working blind. Keep taking any hepatitis B medicine unless that doctor tells you to stop.

Not sure whether this applies to you?

Ask an oncologist

How it usually runs

What happens after you call from Karimnagar, Nizamabad or Nalgonda?

Gather the reports you already have

Scan reports, the scan images on a CD or a link, blood test results and any biopsy report. Photographs of reports on a phone are a useful start, but the original images matter for the tumour board.

First consultation near home

The oncologist at the nearest centre takes the history, examines the patient and checks how well the liver is working. A video consultation can sometimes come first if travel is hard.

The tumour board reviews the case

Oncologists, surgeons, radiologists and liver specialists look at the scans together. If a better scan or a biopsy is needed, CION arranges it through a partner.

A written plan, with the travel spelled out

You are told which steps happen near home and which need a trip, so the family can plan leave, money and a place to stay.

Follow-up back near home

After a procedure in the city, reviews and repeat scans are usually planned closer to home again.

Before the first visit

What should we bring to the first appointment?

  • Every scan report, with the images on a CD, pen drive or online link
  • Recent blood tests, including liver function, AFP and clotting results if done
  • Any biopsy report, and the name of the laboratory that holds the slides
  • A list of every medicine taken, including herbal or Ayurvedic liver tonics
  • Hepatitis B or C reports, and any antiviral prescription
  • Aarogyasri, Ayushman Bharat, CGHS, ECHS or insurance cards
  • One family member who can take notes and ask questions

Leave a number, we will call you

One field. No form to fill in, and no charge for the call.

Side by side

Does this step need a trip to Hyderabad?

Usually near home Usually a planned trip
Consultations, second opinions and follow-up reviews TACE, TARE or ablation by an interventional radiologist
Immunotherapy and targeted therapy in day care Liver resection, where part of the liver is removed
Blood tests and side-effect checks Radiation such as SBRT, a precise high-dose beam
Ultrasound surveillance for people at risk Transplant assessment at a licensed transplant centre

Being straight with you

What this page cannot tell you

It cannot tell you which treatment suits your liver cancer. That depends on the size and number of tumours, how well the liver is working and how fit the patient is. Only the team that has seen the scans and the blood tests can answer it. It also cannot promise that every step can stay local. Some plans need more city trips than others.

Who this page does not apply to

If the cancer started in the bowel and spread to the liver, read the colon cancer pages instead. Liver tumours in children are covered under hepatoblastoma in children. Gallbladder cancer has its own pages too.

When not to wait for an appointment

Vomiting blood, black stools, new confusion or drowsiness, or fever with a swollen belly need a hospital today. Go to the nearest emergency department in your district first. Do not start the journey to Hyderabad to reach a particular doctor.

If you are unsure which centre is nearest, call the helpline and say which town you are in.

Questions we are asked

Common questions from families in the districts

Is there liver cancer treatment in Karimnagar?

Consultations, medicines given as a drip or as tablets, symptom care and follow-up can usually be planned at a CION centre in or near Karimnagar. Procedures such as TACE, ablation and surgery are coordinated through partner hospitals, usually in Hyderabad. The helpline will tell you which centre suits your plan.

Can we get a second opinion without travelling?

Often, yes. Send the scan images, blood tests and any biopsy report. An oncologist can review them and talk to you by video or at the nearest centre. Some questions still need the patient examined in person, and the team will say so plainly if that applies.

How many trips to Hyderabad will treatment need?

It depends on the plan. Someone treated with medicines alone may hardly travel. Someone having TACE or surgery will need at least one planned stay. Ask for the travel to be written into the plan, so the family knows what is coming before treatment starts.

Can immunotherapy be given near Nizamabad or Nalgonda?

Immunotherapy and targeted therapy are given at CION centres, so they can often be given closer to home once the plan is set. Blood tests before each treatment are done locally too. Your oncologist will confirm which centre gives your treatment and on which days.

Where should we go if he vomits blood at night?

Go to the nearest hospital with an emergency department today, in your own district. Vomiting blood or passing black stools can come from swollen veins in the food pipe and needs urgent care. Tell the cancer team afterwards. Do not drive to Hyderabad first.

Does Aarogyasri cover treatment in the districts?

Aarogyasri and Ayushman Bharat cover listed treatments at empanelled hospitals. The lists and rules change, so check them at the time of treatment. Bring the card to the first visit and the team will help with the paperwork. See empanelled centres.

Can surveillance scans be done in our town?

Usually, yes. People with cirrhosis or hepatitis B are advised to have an ultrasound regularly, and a good local scan centre can do it. What matters is keeping to the schedule and sending the report to the same team every time.

Who speaks Telugu at the centre?

Consultations at CION centres in Telangana can be held in Telugu. Ask the helpline when you book if you need a particular language. Bringing a family member who can take notes also helps everyone remember what was said once you are home again.

Your Specialists

Meet CION's liver cancer specialists. Bring your scan reports and liver blood tests.

Our medical and surgical oncologists plan liver cancer care together, weighing the tumour and how well your liver works before choosing surgery, a liver-directed procedure or medicines.
