A liver cancer glossary in Telugu: the key words, side by side | CION Cancer Clinics

This page puts the key liver cancer words in Telugu script beside their English meaning, so you can explain a report to parents who think in Telugu. It covers the illness, the symptoms, the tests and the treatment words. Check one thing first: most cancer found in the liver began somewhere else, which is a different illness with its own treatment. At CION Cancer Clinics in Hyderabad, our oncologists explain liver cancer in plain words and plan care around you and your family.

Who is this Telugu word list for?

This page is for the family member who reads English and needs to explain a liver cancer report to a parent who thinks in Telugu. Each key word appears in Telugu script beside its English meaning, so you can point to it on the phone and say it the way your family says it at home.

First, which liver cancer is it?

The words below are mostly about cancer that starts in the liver, called primary liver cancer, or కాలేయంలోనే మొదలైన క్యాన్సర్. Most cancer found in the liver has actually spread there from another organ, such as the bowel, breast or stomach. That is secondary liver cancer, or వేరే అవయవం నుండి వ్యాపించిన క్యాన్సర్, and it is treated as the cancer it started as. If the report says "metastases", read what secondary liver cancer means before going further.

How to use this list

The words are grouped as you will meet them: naming the illness, describing symptoms, and discussing tests and treatment. The English meanings follow the main liver cancer glossary, which has fuller explanations.

Naming the illness

What are the Telugu words for liver, lump and cirrhosis?

కాలేయం
The liver. Many families simply say "liver" in English as well.
కాలేయ క్యాన్సర్
Liver cancer. On reports this is often HCC (hepatocellular carcinoma), the commonest cancer that starts in the liver.
కాలేయంలో గడ్డ
A lump in the liver. On English reports this is a lesion, nodule, mass or SOL. A గడ్డ is not always cancer; many are harmless.
కాలేయం గట్టిపడటం
Hardening of the liver, which is cirrhosis: heavy scarring that makes cancer more likely.
కొవ్వు కాలేయం
Fatty liver. Common, often silent, and in some people it slowly leads to scarring.
హెపటైటిస్ బి
Hepatitis B, a virus that can quietly damage the liver for years. It is controlled with tablets, not removed.
పిత్త నాళం
The bile duct. Cancer here is cholangiocarcinoma.

Describing symptoms

How do I say the symptoms in Telugu to the doctor?

Older relatives often describe symptoms in their own words. These help you translate them accurately.

Yellowing and itching

కామెర్లు means jaundice: yellow eyes or skin, often with dark urine. దురద means itching, which can come with it. Both mean the doctor should check the bilirubin, a yellow pigment the liver normally clears.

A swelling belly

కడుపులో నీరు means fluid in the belly, which reports call ascites. కాళ్ల వాపు means swollen legs. Both are signs the liver is struggling.

Tiredness and weight

నీరసం means tiredness or weakness. ఆకలి లేకపోవడం means loss of appetite, and బరువు తగ్గడం means losing weight without trying. Tell the doctor how long each has been going on.

Pain

కుడి వైపు పక్కటెముకల కింద నొప్పి means pain under the ribs on the right side. It has many ordinary causes, including gallstones, and is worth mentioning rather than ignoring.

Tests and treatment

What are the Telugu words for scan, biopsy and treatment?

రక్త పరీక్ష
Blood test. For the liver this includes AFP, a marker sometimes raised in liver cancer, and the liver function tests.
స్కాన్
Scan. Families use the English word. A triple-phase CT or MRI shows how blood flows through a spot, which CION arranges through diagnostic partners.
బయాప్సీ, ముక్క పరీక్ష
Biopsy: a small piece of tissue taken with a needle and checked under a microscope.
దశ
Stage. Liver cancer is usually staged with BCLC, a letter from 0 to D, rather than a number.
చికిత్స
Treatment. ఆపరేషన్ is an operation; మందులు are medicines; మాత్రలు are tablets.
కాలేయ మార్పిడి
Liver transplant, done only at licensed transplant centres. Buying or selling an organ is illegal in India.

!
Words that mean go to hospital today

If a relative with cirrhosis or liver cancer says రక్తం వాంతి (vomiting blood), has నల్లటి మలం (black, tarry stools), becomes మగతగా or అయోమయంగా (drowsy or confused), or has జ్వరం (fever) with pain and కడుపులో నీరు (fluid in the belly), go to hospital today. Do not wait for the next clinic visit, and do not give home remedies first. Sudden కామెర్లు with fever also needs a hospital the same day.

Lost in translation

Which words get misunderstood between English and Telugu?

"గడ్డ means cancer."

A గడ్డ is any lump. In the liver many are harmless haemangiomas or cysts. Only the follow-up scan, and sometimes a biopsy, tells you which. Keep the follow-up appointment either way.

"If there is నీరు in the belly, drink less water and it will settle."

Fluid in the belly comes from the liver and blood vessels, not from drinking. It needs a doctor to find the cause. Any salt or fluid limits come from the treating team, not from guesswork.

"కామెర్లు is a simple illness for a herbal remedy."

In an adult, jaundice can come from hepatitis, a blocked bile duct or a tumour. Herbal liver medicines can harm a scarred liver. Tell the doctor what has been taken; nobody will judge you.

"Liver patients must stop eating protein."

Most people with liver disease need enough protein to keep their muscles. Cutting it can weaken them. Ask the team before changing the diet.

Being straight with you

What this word list cannot tell you

A translation helps a family talk about a report. It cannot tell you what the report means for the person in your family. Whether a గడ్డ is cancer, which stage it is and which treatment suits depends on the scans, the blood tests and the liver's own strength, and only the treating team sees all of that together.

It is not a full Telugu page

This list gives the key words only. Telugu speech varies by district, and your family may use different words for the same thing. If a word at home does not match, describe the symptom plainly instead. A full Telugu edition of each liver page is being prepared separately.

Who this does not apply to

If the cancer started in another organ, the staging and treatment words here do not apply in the same way; the original cancer decides. For a child with a liver tumour, see hepatoblastoma in children.

You can ask for the consultation to be explained in Telugu so the whole family hears the same thing.

Questions we are asked

Common questions about liver cancer words in Telugu

What is liver cancer called in Telugu?

It is usually called కాలేయ క్యాన్సర్, and many families simply say "liver cancer". When the cancer started in the liver, say కాలేయంలోనే మొదలైంది. When it spread from another organ, the doctor will name that organ, because the treatment follows it.

Is కాలేయంలో గడ్డ always cancer?

No. A lump in the liver is often a harmless haemangioma, a cyst or a growth of normal liver cells. Only proper scans, and sometimes a biopsy, can tell. Please do not cancel the follow-up scan because the word sounded mild or because the family is frightened.

How do I explain cirrhosis to my parents?

Say కాలేయం గట్టిపడటం, hardening of the liver from long-standing damage. It is often caused by hepatitis B, hepatitis C or fatty liver, not only alcohol. Explain that it raises the chance of cancer, which is why regular checks matter.

What does హెపటైటిస్ బి positive mean for the family?

It means the virus is in the blood. It can be controlled with tablets when a doctor advises them, though not removed. Household members should be tested and vaccinated if they are not protected. It spreads through blood and from mother to baby, not through sharing food.

Is there a Telugu word for AFP or LI-RADS?

No. These are used in English everywhere, including in Telugu-speaking hospitals. Explain AFP as a రక్త పరీక్ష, a blood test marker, and LI-RADS as the radiologist's score for how likely a spot is to be cancer. The main glossary explains both.

How do I describe stage in Telugu?

Stage is దశ. Liver cancer uses BCLC letters, from 0 to D, which combine the tumour size, how many there are, how strong the liver is and how well the person is. A later letter does not mean nothing can be done; the treatment aim changes.

Which Telugu words should send us to hospital?

రక్తం వాంతి (vomiting blood), నల్లటి మలం (black stools), మగత or అయోమయం (drowsiness or confusion), and జ్వరం with pain and fluid in the belly. Any of these in someone with liver disease means go to hospital today, not at the next appointment.

Can the consultation be in Telugu?

You can ask for the plan to be explained in Telugu so parents and elders hear it directly. Bring the reports and a list of the questions the family has. Call the helpline beforehand if you are unsure which centre or appointment suits you.
