Leukaemia
A cancer of the cells that make blood, which starts in the bone marrow. Some types grow fast and need a hospital stay soon. Others grow slowly and are watched for a long time before any treatment.
Dr. Basudev Pokhrel, CION’s haematologist, works with the medical oncology team on leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Call to check where and when your doctor is in.

Other CION centres in Hyderabad
Most people arrive with one of four kinds of problem. Knowing which one you have helps the care team book the right first tests.
A cancer of the cells that make blood, which starts in the bone marrow. Some types grow fast and need a hospital stay soon. Others grow slowly and are watched for a long time before any treatment.
A cancer of the lymph glands. It often shows up as a lump that does not hurt in the neck, armpit or groin that does not go away, sometimes with fevers, night sweats or weight loss. A biopsy of the lump confirms it.
A cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow. It is more common in older adults and often shows up as back or bone pain, kidney trouble, or a low haemoglobin that does not improve with iron.
Low platelets, a very high or very low white cell count, or a low haemoglobin with no clear cause. Many of these turn out not to be cancer. A haematologist finds the cause and says whether it needs treatment.

Tell the care team what the report shows and who ordered it. They ask which language you prefer and whether the patient can travel easily.

Old blood counts matter. A slow change over many months tells the haematologist something quite different from a sudden drop. Bring smear reports, scans and any biopsy slides too.

The consultation is at CION Kukatpally or CION L.B. Nagar, wherever he is seeing patients that day. He examines the patient, reads the reports, and explains what is known and what is still missing.

Often a bone marrow test or a lymph node biopsy. Your team tells you where each test is done and when the results come back.

You hear the plan, the choices, and a written estimate before anything starts. Day-care treatment may be possible closer to Ameerpet if your haematologist agrees.
Every case goes to CION’s network tumour board, where these specialists from CION’s centres join your doctor. Ask for any of them when you book.

The basic blood test. It counts red cells, white cells and platelets, and measures haemoglobin.
A drop of blood looked at under a microscope. It shows whether the cells look normal in shape and size.
Very young blood cells. They are usually found only in the bone marrow, so seeing them in the blood needs a specialist look.
Cells that help blood clot. A low count can cause easy bruising and bleeding gums.
A small sample taken from the hip bone with a needle, under local numbing, to see how blood is being made.
A lab test that sorts cells by markers on their surface. It helps name the exact type of leukaemia or lymphoma.
What to do: Book a haematology visit and bring the report
What to do: Book soon; a biopsy may be needed
What to do: Ask the care team about a myeloma check
What to do: Go to the nearest emergency department now
CION Ameerpet is a chemotherapy and consultation centre. The haematology consultation itself happens at Kukatpally or L.B. Nagar, but Ameerpet stays useful to you through the whole journey.
CION Cancer Clinics, 2nd Floor, Plot No. 4, HMDA Maitrivanam, Satyam Theatre Road, beside Blue Fox Hotel, Srinivasa Nagar, Ameerpet, Hyderabad 500038. It is about an eight-minute walk from Ameerpet Metro and close to the Ameerpet bus stop. It is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM.
Chemotherapy is given at this centre as day-care. Some blood cancer treatments suit day-care well. Others, such as the first phase of treatment for fast-growing leukaemia, need a hospital stay. Dr. Pokhrel tells you which applies to you, and where.
People from Begumpet, SR Nagar, Punjagutta, Somajiguda and Erramanzil often find Ameerpet the easiest centre to reach. One helpline books every CION centre in Hyderabad.
Good to know
This page cannot tell you what your report means. A haematologist reading it with the patient in front of them can.
Myth
What is true: Outcomes vary a great deal by type. Some lymphomas respond very well to treatment, and some slow leukaemias are only watched for years. Ask your haematologist what is known about your type, not about blood cancer in general.
Myth
What is true: Often it does. But a low count that does not improve with iron, or that comes with low platelets or odd white cells, needs a proper look. Taking tonics for months can delay that look.
Myth
What is true: It is a routine test done with local numbing. Most people feel pressure and a short sharp ache, and go home the same day. It gives answers no blood test can.
Myth
What is true: Many people are treated with medicines alone. A transplant is considered only for certain types and stages. If it ever comes up, your team explains why and where it would be done.

No. Dr. Pokhrel sees patients at CION Kukatpally and CION L.B. Nagar. You can still call the same helpline that serves Ameerpet, and the care team books the consultation at whichever of the two suits your family. Follow-up care may be possible at Ameerpet.
He holds an MBBS and an MD in Immunohaematology and Blood Transfusion, and a Fellowship in Clinical Haematology from CMC Vellore. His work is focused on blood cancers and blood disorders, which is why CION routes leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma to him.
Usually it is not. Viral fevers, some medicines and other conditions lower platelets too. A haematologist looks at the full count, the smear and the history before deciding whether further tests, such as a bone marrow test, are needed. Bring all your previous reports.
Chemotherapy is given at CION Ameerpet as day-care. Whether your own treatment suits day-care depends on the type of blood cancer and the phase of treatment. Dr. Pokhrel decides this and tells you where each part of your treatment will be given.
Your care team tells you where it is done and how to prepare before the day. It is a short procedure with local numbing, and most people go home afterwards. The results take some time, because several lab tests are run on the same sample.
No. You can call the helpline or leave your number on this page. A note from the doctor who ordered the blood test helps, but it is not required. What matters most is every blood report you have, old and new, so the haematologist can see the trend.
CION's team helps with cashless insurance and gives you a written estimate before you start. Bring your insurance card and policy papers to the first visit. If you are covered by an employer or government scheme, mention it when you call so the team can check.
Yes. Many families begin with a conversation about the reports, especially when the patient is unwell. The haematologist will need to see the patient before treatment is planned, but a lot can be explained to the family first, including which tests come next.
