When is radiotherapy part of a cancer plan?

Radiotherapy can play several different roles. Your radiation oncologist tells you which one applies to you.

As the main treatment

For some cancers of the head and neck, cervix and skin, radiotherapy can be the main treatment instead of an operation. It is often given alongside chemotherapy, which makes the cancer cells more sensitive to the beam.

After an operation

When a surgeon has removed a tumour, radiotherapy may be given afterwards to lower the chance of the cancer returning in the same place. This is common after breast-conserving surgery.

Before an operation

For some cancers of the rectum and food pipe, radiotherapy is given first to shrink the tumour. The operation that follows can then be smaller or more complete.

To ease symptoms

When cancer has spread to bone or is pressing on a nerve, a short course can ease pain and help someone stay mobile. This is called palliative radiotherapy, which means treatment aimed at comfort rather than removing every cancer cell.

How does a family go from Ameerpet to a radiotherapy plan?

  1. 1

Start with the reports you have

Call the helpline or leave your number. The care team asks what has been found, which hospital found it, and whether anyone has mentioned radiotherapy yet. Collect the biopsy report, scans and discharge summaries.

  2. 2

    See the oncologists at Ameerpet

Many families begin with a consultation at CION Ameerpet. The doctor goes through every report and decides which specialists need to look at your case.

  3. 3

    Tumour board review

Surgical, medical and radiation oncologists discuss your case together. They agree on the order of treatment and whether radiotherapy belongs in it at all.

  4. 4

    Meet the radiation oncologist

Dr. Mohanty or Dr. Vajrala explains why radiotherapy is advised, what it will feel like, and which side effects to expect. You are told the centre where it will be given.

  5. 5

A planning scan, then daily treatment

A planning scan maps the exact area to treat. Treatment follows on weekdays, with a review by the doctor during the course.

More CION Specialists

Every case goes to CION’s network tumour board, where these specialists from CION’s centres join your doctor. Ask for any of them when you book.

What should you ask a radiation oncologist at the first meeting?

Why is radiotherapy advised for me?

Why it matters: You should hear its exact role: main treatment, after surgery, or for symptoms

Where will it be given, and how do I get there?

Why it matters: You will travel there on most weekdays, so the place matters

Roughly how long will the course run?

Why it matters: It shapes leave from work and where you stay

Which side effects are likely for this area?

Why it matters: They depend on the part of the body being treated

Who do I call if a side effect worries me?

Why it matters: A named contact helps you act early

What can you do at CION Ameerpet while radiotherapy happens elsewhere?

CION Ameerpet gives consultations and chemotherapy. Many radiotherapy plans include chemotherapy, so part of your treatment may still happen close to home even when the beam is given somewhere else.

1Chemotherapy alongside radiation

When chemotherapy is given in the same weeks as radiotherapy, your medical oncologist plans it and checks your blood counts. Your care team works out the timing so the two do not clash on the same day where that can be avoided.

2Finding the centre

CION Cancer Clinics is on the 2nd Floor, Plot No. 4, HMDA Maitrivanam, Satyam Theatre Road, beside Blue Fox Hotel, Srinivasa Nagar, Ameerpet, Hyderabad 500038. It is about an eight-minute walk from Ameerpet Metro and near the Ameerpet bus stop. It is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM.

3Families from nearby areas

People from Begumpet, SR Nagar, Punjagutta, Somajiguda and Erramanzil often find Ameerpet easiest for consultations and follow-up. If another CION centre suits you better, the same helpline books it.

Good to know

This page cannot tell you whether you need radiotherapy. Your reports and the tumour board can.

Which fears about radiation keep families from asking?

Myth

"After radiation, the patient is dangerous to children at home."

What is true: With beam radiotherapy from a machine outside the body, nothing stays inside you. You can hug your grandchildren the same evening. Some internal treatments carry short precautions, and your doctor tells you if yours is one of them.

Myth

"Radiation burns the whole body."

What is true: The beam is shaped to the area being treated. Side effects show up mostly in that area: the skin there may turn red and sore, and you may feel tired. A mouth or throat treatment affects eating; a pelvic one affects the bowel.

Myth

"Missing a few days does not matter."

What is true: The plan works because the doses come close together. Gaps can weaken it. If travel or illness makes a visit hard, tell the team early so they can help.

Myth

"Radiotherapy is only offered when nothing else is left."

What is true: For many cancers it is part of the first plan, given to remove the disease or to stop it coming back. It is also used to ease pain. The reason is different for each person.

Questions about radiation oncology for Ameerpet families

Still unsure? Call 1800 202 8726.

1Is radiotherapy given at CION Ameerpet?

No. CION Ameerpet gives consultations and chemotherapy. Radiotherapy is planned by CION's radiation oncologists and given at a centre your care team names. You are told the name and location of that centre, and given a written estimate, before you agree to start.

2Which radiation oncologists are on the CION team?

Dr. Kirti Ranjan Mohanty (MBBS, MD Radiation Oncology) and Dr. Gangadhar Vajrala (MBBS, MD Radiation Oncology, MPH). They are part of the team that serves Ameerpet. The care team tells you where and when each of them sees patients, so call before you travel.

3How often will I need to go for radiotherapy?

Usually every weekday for several weeks, though some courses are much shorter, especially when the aim is to ease pain. Your radiation oncologist gives you the plan for your case. Ask about it early so the family can arrange travel, leave and somewhere to stay if needed.

4Does each session hurt?

You do not feel the beam itself. You lie still on a couch while the machine moves around you, and the staff watch you from the next room. Discomfort, if it comes, builds up over the course in the treated area, such as sore skin or a sore throat.

5Can chemotherapy and radiotherapy be given together?

Yes, for several cancers they are planned together. Chemotherapy can be given at CION Ameerpet while radiotherapy happens at the centre your team names. Your medical and radiation oncologists agree on the timing so that both fit around your blood counts.

6Can I get a second opinion on a radiotherapy plan?

Yes. Bring the plan, your scans and the biopsy report. A CION oncologist will go through it and tell you whether they agree, and if not, why. It does not commit you to treatment at CION, and it rarely delays the start by much.

7Will insurance cover radiotherapy?

CION's team helps with cashless insurance and gives you a written estimate before you start. Bring your policy details to the first visit. If you are covered by a government or employer scheme, mention it when you call so the team can check it for you.

8Can my son or daughter come first without the patient?

Yes. Many families start with a relative bringing the reports to Ameerpet. The doctor can explain what has been found and whether radiotherapy is likely to be part of the plan. The patient will still need to be seen before any treatment is planned.
