Head and neck cancers
Cancers of the mouth, tongue, throat and voice box are often treated with radiation, alone or after surgery, and frequently with chemotherapy in the same weeks.
They plan radiotherapy with your surgeon and medical oncologist, and your care team names the centre that gives it. Call to check where and when your doctor is in.

These are frequent examples, not a full list. Your own plan depends on the type and stage of your cancer.
Cancers of the mouth, tongue, throat and voice box are often treated with radiation, alone or after surgery, and frequently with chemotherapy in the same weeks.
After an operation that keeps the breast, radiation to the breast is usual. After a mastectomy, it is advised for some women depending on the size of the tumour and the lymph nodes, the small glands under the arm.
For many women, radiation with chemotherapy is the main treatment. It often includes brachytherapy, where the radiation source is placed inside the body for a short time.
Short courses can ease pain, protect a weak bone or calm symptoms from spread to the brain. The aim here is comfort and function.
Radiation, often with chemotherapy, may be given before an operation to shrink the tumour and make the surgery more complete.

Meet Dr. Mohanty or Dr. Vajrala at CION Kukatpally with every report you have. Bring a family member who will help with decisions, and a list of every medicine the patient takes, including any from other doctors.

Your case is discussed with surgeons and medical oncologists, so radiation is placed in the right order with the other treatments. You then hear the recommendation and the alternatives in plain words.

A planning scan maps the area. Daily treatment follows at the centre your team names, with regular doctor reviews. Tell the technologist at once if anything feels different from the day before.

Follow-up visits and any further medicines can usually return here, to the doctors who planned your care.
Every case goes to CION’s network tumour board, where these specialists from CION’s centres join your doctor. Ask for any of them when you book.

Start with a Consultation
Ask for the doctor you want, or we’ll match you.
The planning appointment. You lie in your treatment position while a scan is taken, and nothing is treated that day.
A shaped cover that holds the head or a limb still, so the beam hits the same spot each time.
The total amount of radiation prescribed, split into small daily treatments.
A few extra treatments to a smaller area at the end of a course, where the tumour was.
A full course aimed at controlling the cancer for the long term, as opposed to a shorter course for comfort.
Consultations and chemotherapy are both given at CION Kukatpally. That matters, because many radiation plans include chemotherapy in the same weeks.
When chemotherapy runs alongside radiation, your medical oncologist gives it here and checks your blood counts before each dose. The radiation oncologists who planned your beam treatment work from the same centre, so changes can be agreed quickly if side effects build up.
CION Kukatpally is inside OMNI Hospitals, Mumbai Highway, opposite Big Bazaar, Balaji Nagar, Kukatpally, Hyderabad 500072. It is about an eight-minute walk from Kukatpally Metro and near the Balaji Nagar bus stop. It is open Monday to Saturday, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Families from KPHB, JNTU, Bharat Nagar, Moosapet, Miyapur, Balanagar and Nizampet often find Kukatpally the easiest CION centre to reach. The same helpline books any other CION centre if that suits you better.
Side effects tend to grow in the second half of a course. If the skin breaks, eating becomes hard or a fever appears, call the care team the same day rather than waiting for the next review. They will tell you whether to come in to Kukatpally, go to the treating centre, or go to the nearest emergency department.
Good to know
Call before you come, so the radiation oncologist you want to see is in on that day.
Myth
What is true: For many cancers it is part of the first plan, aimed at controlling the disease for good or stopping it returning after surgery. It is also used for comfort later. The reason depends on your case.
Myth
What is true: Gentle activity, such as a short walk each day, often helps with tiredness. Rest when you need to, but staying in bed all day tends to make people feel weaker, not stronger.
Myth
What is true: Skin soreness and tiredness often peak just after the course ends and then settle over the following weeks. Keep following the skin care advice until the team says you can stop.
Myth
What is true: For some cancers the combination works clearly better than either alone. It is planned with care, with blood tests and reviews, and doses are adjusted if your body needs a lighter touch.

Most full courses mean going in every weekday for several weeks. Courses to ease pain are often much shorter. Your radiation oncologist gives you the schedule for your case at the consultation. Ask early so the family can plan travel and leave from work.
No. You can book directly through the helpline or by leaving your number here. A letter from your current doctor is useful, but every report and scan you already have matters far more. Bring them all, including the older ones.
Call the team the same day for a fever, bleeding, skin that breaks open or weeps, being unable to eat or drink, or new breathlessness. Mild redness and tiredness are expected, but tell your doctor at the next review so they can help.
Yes. Chemotherapy is given at CION Kukatpally. When it runs alongside radiation, your medical oncologist checks your blood counts first, and the timing is agreed with your radiation oncologist so both treatments fit your week.
