A biopsy has confirmed cancer
If the tissue report says cancer in a solid organ, such as the breast, mouth, stomach or bowel, a cancer surgeon should see it early, even if surgery turns out not to be the first step.
They decide whether an operation can remove the cancer, and plan it with medical and radiation oncologists. Call to check where and when your doctor is in.

Any of these is a good reason to bring your reports to a surgical oncologist now.
If the tissue report says cancer in a solid organ, such as the breast, mouth, stomach or bowel, a cancer surgeon should see it early, even if surgery turns out not to be the first step.
A growth seen on a scan that has not yet been sampled. The surgeon decides whether a biopsy is needed, which type, and where it is best taken from.
A lump that is growing, hard, or fixed in place, or a sore that has not healed. Most turn out to be harmless, and a specialist can tell you which need a closer look.
If another hospital has suggested surgery, a second opinion before the date is reasonable. You hear whether the plan, timing and approach make sense for your case.

How long you stay depends on the operation. You are helped to sit up, walk and eat as soon as it is safe, because moving early helps the body heal.

You leave with instructions for the wound, your medicines and what to eat. You also get a number to call, and clear advice on which problems mean going to an emergency department.

The laboratory studies what was removed. This report is the most important paper of the whole treatment, and the surgeon goes through it with you at Kukatpally.

The tumour board looks at the report. Some people need nothing more than follow-up. Others are advised chemotherapy or radiotherapy to lower the chance of the cancer returning.

Visits are close together at first, then spaced out. They are how a return of the cancer is caught early.
Every case goes to CION’s network tumour board, where these specialists from CION’s centres join your doctor. Ask for any of them when you book.
Decide whether an operation can remove the cancer, and when.

How unusual the cancer cells look under the microscope. It is not the same as stage.
How large the cancer was and how far it had reached. Most decisions about further treatment rest on this.
The edge of the removed tissue. A clear margin means no cancer cells were found at that edge.
Small glands near the tumour. The report says how many were checked and whether any held cancer.
Treatment given after the operation to lower the chance of the cancer coming back.
This is where you meet your surgeon, agree the plan, have any chemotherapy and come back for follow-up. Only the operation happens elsewhere.
Chemotherapy is given at CION Kukatpally, usually as day-care. If your plan needs medicines to shrink the tumour first, or to follow the operation, you have them at the same centre where your surgeon sees you.
For leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, medicines lead the treatment. When a cancer has already spread to several organs, treatment that reaches the whole body usually comes first. A surgeon will say so plainly, and point you to the right specialist.

Good to know
This page cannot tell you whether you need an operation. A surgeon who has seen your reports can.
Myth
What is true: Planned surgery by a cancer surgeon does not set the disease loose. What helps a cancer grow is time. Putting off a biopsy or an operation for this reason is one of the most common and costly delays.
Myth
What is true: Not always. The aim is to remove the cancer completely with as little harm as possible. Sometimes a smaller, well-planned operation after medicines is the better choice.
Myth
What is true: The tissue report decides that, and it often arrives after you are home. Wait to hear what it shows before closing the file.
Myth
What is true: People usually cope better when they understand why an operation is needed. The surgeon can explain it gently, with the family present.

Dr. Sridhar Kamani and Dr. Muralidhar Muddusetty, both surgical oncologists, see patients at CION Kukatpally. They work with CION's medical and radiation oncologists, and complex cases go to the tumour board. Call the helpline to check which surgeon is in on the day you want to come.
CION Kukatpally does not perform operations. Do not assume the operation will be in the same building. Your care team names the hospital where it takes place, and tells you how far it is, before you or your family agree to anything.
Yes. When an operation might come later, it helps for the surgeon to see the tumour before medicines shrink it. That way the surgeon knows where it started, and the later operation can be planned properly. The medical oncologist and the surgeon then agree the timing together.
It usually arrives after you are home, because the laboratory needs time to study the tissue carefully. Your surgeon tells you when to expect it and goes through it with you at a follow-up visit. Bring a family member, as the report guides what comes next.
Yes. Bring the advice from the other hospital and every report behind it. A CION surgeon will say whether they agree with the operation and its timing, and explain any difference. A second opinion does not commit you to treatment at CION.
CION's team helps with cashless insurance and gives you a written estimate before you start. Bring your insurance card and policy papers to your first visit, so the team can check your cover before the operation date is set.
The centre is open Monday to Saturday, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. It is inside OMNI Hospitals on the Mumbai Highway, near Kukatpally Metro and the Balaji Nagar bus stop. Call ahead so the surgeon you want to see is in that day.
Fever, a wound that turns red, hot or leaks, pain that keeps getting worse, or trouble breathing. Call the number you were given if anything worries you. For sudden or severe problems, go to the nearest emergency department first and let your care team know afterwards.
