What does the first month with a medical oncologist look like?

  1. 1

    A phone call

The care team asks what the reports say so far, which hospital found the cancer and whether the patient can travel easily. They fix a time that suits the family.

  2. 2

    The first consultation

Dr. Owais Mohammed reads every report, examines the patient and asks about other illnesses and medicines. Bring the full list, including tablets for sugar, blood pressure and thyroid.

  3. 3

    Tests that are still missing

A staging scan, blood tests that check the liver, kidneys and heart, or a test on the tumour tissue. Each one is explained before it is ordered, with where it is done.

  4. 4

Your case at the tumour board

Medical, surgical and radiation oncologists agree the order of treatment together. You hear what they recommend, the alternatives and what each would mean for daily life.

  5. 5

    The first treatment

With a written plan and a written cost estimate in hand, you start. The first round is watched closely, and the support medicines are adjusted for the next one based on how you felt.

How does chemotherapy fit around daily life?

Treatment changes routines, but it does not have to stop them. These are the questions families raise most often.

Work

Many people keep working, taking the day of treatment and a day or two after off. Tell your oncologist about your job so the schedule can be planned around it where possible.

Food

Freshly cooked home food and clean water are best. Small meals often work better than large ones. Avoid raw street food while your counts are low.

Religious fasting

Fasting can affect blood sugar, hydration and how some tablets work. Discuss it with your oncologist before a fasting period, not during it.

Visitors

Company helps. When counts are low, ask anyone with a cold or fever to wait until they are well before visiting.

Sleep and energy

Tiredness is the most common side effect. Short walks often help more than lying in bed all day.

Other medicines

Do not start or stop any tablet, tonic or herbal product without asking. Some change how cancer drugs work.

More CION Specialists

Every case goes to CION’s network tumour board, where these specialists from CION’s centres join your doctor. Ask for any of them when you book.

Which health conditions change a chemotherapy plan?

Diabetes

Why it matters: Steroids given with chemotherapy can push sugar up, so checks increase

Heart disease

Why it matters: Some drugs are hard on the heart, so a heart test may come first

Kidney or liver problems

Why it matters: These organs clear the drugs, so doses may be lowered

Blood thinners

Why it matters: Low platelets plus thinners raise the risk of bleeding

Hepatitis B in the past

Why it matters: It can flare during treatment, so a blood test checks first

Where is CION Tolichowki, and what happens there?

You see Dr. Owais Mohammed and receive chemotherapy at CION Tolichowki. Operations and radiotherapy are not given here. If your plan needs either, your care team names the centre and shares the estimate before you agree.

1Address and timings

CION Cancer Clinics, 12-2-718, Khader Bagh Road, inside Premier Hospital, Padmanabha Nagar, Toli Chowki, Hyderabad 500008. It is near the Tolichowki bus stop. The centre is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM.

2Who it serves

Families from Mehdipatnam, Attapur, Rethibowli, Nadeem Colony, Karwan and Langar Houz often find Tolichowki the closest CION centre. When treatment means coming back again and again, a short trip home matters, especially for an older patient who tires easily.

3Language and family

Tell the care team which language the patient is most comfortable in when you call. Bring the relative who will help with decisions, so the plan is heard once, clearly, by the people who need it.

Good to know

This centre is not an emergency department. For fever, bleeding or sudden breathlessness during treatment, go to the nearest emergency department first.

What do people often believe about cancer treatment that is wrong?

Myth

"Diabetes means you cannot have chemotherapy."

What is true: Many people with diabetes have chemotherapy safely. Sugar is checked more often and medicines may be adjusted. Tell the oncologist at the first visit.

Myth

"Cancer is contagious, so keep the patient apart."

What is true: Cancer does not spread from person to person. Family can eat together, hug and share a home. Only take care around visitors with infections when counts are low.

Myth

"A biopsy makes the cancer spread."

What is true: A biopsy is how the cancer is confirmed and how the right medicine is chosen. Avoiding it delays treatment without protecting the patient.

Myth

"Once treatment ends, there is no need for check-ups."

What is true: Follow-up visits look for any return early and help with long-term side effects. Keep them, even when you feel well.

What does the blood test before chemotherapy check?

Haemoglobin

Carries oxygen in the blood. When it drops, you feel tired and short of breath, and the doctor may treat it before the next round.

White cells

Fight infection. If they are too low, the dose may wait a few days so your body can recover.

Platelets

Help the blood clot. Low platelets mean easy bruising or bleeding, and they are checked closely.

Kidney tests

Show how well your kidneys clear the drugs. Some doses depend on them.

Liver tests

Show how the liver is coping. Changes can mean a dose needs adjusting.

Questions about medical oncology at CION Tolichowki

Still unsure? Call 1800 202 8726.

1Which medical oncologist sees patients at CION Tolichowki?

Dr. Owais Mohammed sees patients at CION Tolichowki. He trained in general medicine and then medical oncology, and plans chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy. His plans are discussed with CION's surgical and radiation oncologists at a tumour board.

2Is chemotherapy given at Tolichowki?

Yes. Chemotherapy is given at CION Tolichowki, usually as day-care, so the patient goes home the same day. If a treatment needs an overnight stay, the oncologist tells you during planning and explains where it will happen.

3What is the address?

12-2-718, Khader Bagh Road, inside Premier Hospital, Padmanabha Nagar, Toli Chowki, Hyderabad 500008, near the Tolichowki bus stop. The care team can give directions on the phone when you book your visit.

4My father is elderly with diabetes. Can he still be treated?

Often, yes. Age and diabetes do not rule out treatment by themselves. The oncologist looks at his overall fitness, his other illnesses and what he wants, then chooses drugs and doses to suit. Bring all his current medicines to the first visit.

5Can I get a second opinion on a plan from another hospital?

Yes. Bring the plan and every report behind it. Dr. Owais Mohammed will tell you whether he agrees, and if not, why. It does not commit you to treatment at CION, and many families find it helps them start with confidence.

6Does CION Tolichowki help with insurance?

CION's team helps with cashless insurance and gives you a written estimate before you start. Bring your insurance card and policy papers, and tell the team about any employer cover when you call so it can be checked.

7What are the opening hours?

Monday to Saturday, 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM. Confirm your appointment the day before. On treatment days, the team gives you an arrival time so that the blood test is ready when the doctor sees you.

8What counts as an emergency during chemotherapy?

Fever or shivering, bleeding that will not stop, sudden breathlessness, chest pain or confusion. Go straight to the nearest emergency department, take your treatment papers and say the patient is on chemotherapy. Then call the CION care team.
