Which kind of cancer specialist do you need?

Your biopsy report and scans decide where you start. Our care team will book the right one if you are not sure.

Medical oncologist

Plans and supervises cancer medicines: chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy. Usually the doctor you see most often, and the one who watches side effects between visits.

At CION Ameerpet

  • Dr. Naresh Gundu
  • Dr. N. Kiranmayee

Surgical oncologist

Decides whether the cancer can be removed, how much tissue to take, and whether medicines should shrink it first. They also take many of the biopsies that confirm a diagnosis.

On the team

  • Dr. Sandeep Vajja, who sees patients at Ameerpet
  • Dr. Muralidhar Muddusetty

Radiation oncologist

Plans radiotherapy: which area to treat, how much, and over how long. Often brought in before or after surgery, or when an operation is not the right choice.

On the team

  • Dr. Kirti Ranjan Mohanty
  • Dr. Gangadhar Vajrala

Haematologist

Treats blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and blood count problems that need a specialist. If your report came from a blood test or a bone marrow test, start here.

On the team

  • Dr. Basudev Pokhrel

What happens when you first see an oncologist at CION Ameerpet?

  1. 1

A call from our care team

You leave your number, or call the helpline. Someone from the care team asks what has been found so far, which hospital found it, and which language you are most comfortable in. Then they fix a time.

  2. 2

    Bring every report you have

Biopsy reports, scan films and CDs, blood tests and discharge summaries. Bring the ones you think are old or unimportant. The doctor is often looking for one line in an early report.

  3. 3

    The consultation

The oncologist goes through the reports with you, examines you, and explains what is known and what is not. Bring the family member who will help make decisions, so nobody has to repeat it later.

  4. 4

    Tests to complete the picture

Many people need one or two more tests before a plan is possible. Your team tells you which, why, and where each one is done.

  5. 5

    Tumour board and your plan

Your case is discussed by medical, surgical and radiation oncologists together. You then hear the recommendation, the alternatives, and a written estimate of the cost before anything starts.

More CION Specialists

Every case goes to CION’s network tumour board, where these specialists from CION’s centres join your doctor. Ask for any of them when you book.

What should you ask before choosing an oncologist?

Do you treat my type of cancer often?

A good answer sounds like: A plain yes, or an honest referral to a colleague who does

Will other specialists look at my case?

A good answer sounds like: Yes, at a tumour board, before the plan is confirmed

Where will each part of my treatment happen?

A good answer sounds like: A named centre for each step, not a vague promise

What will it cost, and does my insurance cover it?

A good answer sounds like: A written estimate before treatment starts

Who do I call if something goes wrong at home?

A good answer sounds like: A number that is answered, and clear advice on when to go to emergency

What is done at CION Ameerpet, and what happens elsewhere?

Consultations and chemotherapy happen at CION Ameerpet itself. For an operation or radiotherapy, your doctors plan it here and your care team books it at the centre that does it, so you know the place before you say yes.

1Chemotherapy close to home

Chemotherapy is given at this centre. For most people that means day-care: you come in the morning, your blood counts are checked, the treatment is given, and you go home the same day. The doctor who planned it can see you on the same visit if something has changed.

2Where to find us

CION Cancer Clinics, 2nd Floor, Plot No. 4, HMDA Maitrivanam, Satyam Theatre Road, beside Blue Fox Hotel, Srinivasa Nagar, Ameerpet, Hyderabad 500038. It is about an eight-minute walk from Ameerpet Metro and near the Ameerpet bus stop. The centre is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM.

3If you live nearby

Families from Begumpet, SR Nagar, Punjagutta, Somajiguda and Erramanzil often find Ameerpet the easiest centre to reach. If another CION centre in Hyderabad is closer to you, the same helpline books it.

Good to know

This page cannot tell you which doctor is right for your case. Your reports can. Share them with our care team and they will book the specialist who fits.

What do families get wrong when choosing a cancer doctor?

Myth

"A bigger hospital always means better cancer care."

What is true: What matters most is whether the doctors treat your cancer regularly and plan together. A large building with no tumour board can give you one doctor's opinion. A smaller centre linked to a full team can give you three.

Myth

"We must stay with the doctor who found the cancer."

What is true: The doctor who found it may be a general surgeon, a gynaecologist or a physician. Thank them, take every report, and see a cancer specialist. Good doctors expect this and will not take offence.

Myth

"Asking for a second opinion will upset our doctor."

What is true: A second opinion is normal in cancer care. It either confirms the plan, which gives you confidence, or raises a question worth asking before treatment starts. Either way, you lose very little time.

Myth

"Chemotherapy means staying in hospital."

What is true: Most chemotherapy today is given as day-care. You come in, receive it, and sleep at home that night. Some treatments do need a stay, and your oncologist will tell you in advance if yours is one of them.

Leave your number and our care team calls you back, or call any time. One helpline serves every CION centre.

Common questions about seeing an oncologist in Ameerpet

Still unsure? Call 1800 202 8726.

1Which oncologists see patients at CION Ameerpet?

Medical oncologists Dr. Naresh Gundu and Dr. N. Kiranmayee, and surgical oncologist Dr. Sandeep Vajja, see patients at Ameerpet. They work with the wider CION team, including surgical, radiation and blood cancer specialists. Call the helpline to check which doctor is in on the day you want to come.

2Do I need a referral letter to book?

No. You can book directly by calling the helpline or leaving your number on this page. A letter from the doctor who found the cancer is useful but not required. What matters far more is bringing every report, scan and discharge summary you already have.

3Is chemotherapy given at the Ameerpet centre?

Yes. Chemotherapy is given at CION Ameerpet, usually as day-care, so most people go home the same day. Your oncologist plans each cycle, checks your blood counts first, and tells you in advance if your treatment needs a hospital stay instead.

4Where would surgery or radiotherapy happen?

Not at Ameerpet. Your CION doctors plan the operation or the radiotherapy, and your care team books it at the centre that does it. You are told the name and location of that centre, and given a written estimate, before you agree to anything.

5Can I get a second opinion on a plan from another hospital?

Yes. Bring the plan and every report behind it. An oncologist will go through it with you and tell you whether they agree, and if not, why. Many families use this to feel sure before treatment starts. It does not commit you to treatment at CION.

6Does CION Ameerpet accept health insurance?

CION's team helps with cashless insurance and gives you a written estimate before you start. Bring your insurance card and policy details to the first visit. If you are covered by a government or employer scheme, ask the care team when you call, so they can check it for you.

7What are the timings, and how do I get there?

The centre is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM. It is on Satyam Theatre Road, beside Blue Fox Hotel in Srinivasa Nagar, about an eight-minute walk from Ameerpet Metro and near the Ameerpet bus stop. Call ahead so the doctor you need is in.

8Can a family member come without the patient?

Yes, for a first conversation about the reports. Many families start this way, especially when the patient is unwell or lives in another district. The oncologist will still need to see the patient before treatment is planned, but much can be explained to you first.
