Chemotherapy
Drugs that kill fast-growing cells. Given into a vein or as tablets, in rounds with rest gaps so your body can recover. Tiredness, hair loss and low blood counts are common, and your oncologist plans for them.
They plan chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy, with surgeons and radiation doctors at a tumour board. Call to check where and when your doctor is in.

Most plans use one or two of these. Your report decides which, not the doctor's habit.
Drugs that kill fast-growing cells. Given into a vein or as tablets, in rounds with rest gaps so your body can recover. Tiredness, hair loss and low blood counts are common, and your oncologist plans for them.
Drugs aimed at one specific change inside the cancer cells. They only help when a test on the tumour finds that change, so your doctor may ask for that test before choosing.
Drugs that help your own immune system recognise the cancer. Used for some cancers and not others. The side effects are different from chemotherapy and need their own kind of watching.
Tablets or injections that block the hormones some cancers feed on, such as many breast and prostate cancers. Often taken for a long time, mostly at home, with regular check-ups.

Your blood counts and sometimes liver and kidney tests are checked before any drug is given. If the counts are too low, the dose may wait a few days. That is a safety step, not a setback.

Your oncologist or the nurse asks how the last round went. Tell them about fever, loose motions, mouth sores or numbness, even if they seemed small. Doses are adjusted on what you report.

Most people get medicines to prevent feeling sick before the chemotherapy itself starts. This is routine and is one reason vomiting is far less common than families expect.

The drip runs while nurses watch. Some drugs take a short time, others most of the day. Bring a family member, water and something to pass the time.

You leave with written advice, tablets to take at home and a number to call. You are also told which warning signs mean you should go to an emergency department straight away.
Every case goes to CION’s network tumour board, where these specialists from CION’s centres join your doctor. Ask for any of them when you book.

Start with a Consultation
Ask for the doctor you want, or we’ll match you.
One round of treatment followed by a rest gap. A plan is usually written as a set number of these.
Medicine given after surgery to lower the chance of the cancer coming back.
The same idea given before surgery, often to shrink the cancer first.
Treatment aimed at controlling the cancer and easing symptoms when it cannot be removed. It can still run for a long time.
A marker found by testing the tumour that tells the doctor whether a targeted drug or immunotherapy is likely to help.
Why it matters: To remove all cancer, to shrink it before surgery, or to control it. Each changes what you accept
Why it matters: So you can plan work, meals and who stays at home
Why it matters: Surgeons and radiation doctors should agree the order of treatment
Why it matters: A written estimate before the first dose avoids surprises later
Why it matters: Fever during chemotherapy needs a fast answer
Consultations with the medical oncologists and chemotherapy both happen at CION Ameerpet. You see the doctor who planned your treatment in the same building where you receive it.
CION Cancer Clinics, 2nd Floor, Plot No. 4, HMDA Maitrivanam, Satyam Theatre Road, beside Blue Fox Hotel, Srinivasa Nagar, Ameerpet, Hyderabad 500038. It is about an eight-minute walk from Ameerpet Metro and near the Ameerpet bus stop. The centre is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM.
Families from Begumpet, SR Nagar, Punjagutta, Somajiguda and Erramanzil often choose Ameerpet because the Metro is close. Being near matters on chemotherapy, because you may come in often and you will not want a long journey home on a tiring day.
Operations and radiotherapy are not done at Ameerpet. If your plan needs either, your CION team tells you which centre does it, and you know the place and the estimate before you agree.
Good to know
If someone on chemotherapy has a fever, shivering or sudden breathlessness, go to the nearest emergency department first and call us after.
Myth
What is true: Medicines given before each round prevent most of this. Some people still feel queasy for a day or two. Tell your doctor, because the anti-sickness plan can be changed.
Myth
What is true: It depends on the drug. Some chemotherapy causes hair loss and some does not. Targeted therapy and hormone therapy usually do not. Ask before the first round so you are prepared.
Myth
What is true: A delay usually means your blood counts need a few more days to recover. Waiting keeps you safe. It does not mean the cancer is winning.
Myth
What is true: Some herbs change how cancer drugs work or affect the liver. Show your oncologist everything you take, including powders and tonics, before you start.

Dr. Naresh Gundu and Dr. N. Kiranmayee, both trained in medical oncology, see patients at Ameerpet. They work with CION's surgical, radiation and blood cancer specialists, and each case is discussed at a tumour board. Call the helpline to check which of them is in on the day you want to come.
Yes. Chemotherapy is given at CION Ameerpet, usually as day-care in a treatment chair, so most people go home the same evening. Your oncologist tells you in advance if a particular drug needs a hospital stay instead, and where that would be.
Often, yes. Bring the plan, the drug names and doses already given, and every report behind them. The oncologist will check the plan, may ask for fresh blood tests, and then tell you whether they agree to continue it as written or would change anything.
You may not know, and that is fine. Tell the care team what the biopsy or scan says. If medicines are likely to come first, they book a medical oncologist. If an operation is the likely first step, they book a surgical oncologist. The tumour board then agrees the order.
CION's team helps with cashless insurance and gives you a written estimate before you start. Bring your insurance card and policy papers to the first visit. If you are covered by an employer or government scheme, mention it when you call so the team can check it.
Every report you have: biopsy, scans with their CDs, blood tests and discharge summaries. Bring a list of the medicines you take now, including tablets for sugar or blood pressure and any herbal products. Bring the family member who will help with decisions.
The centre is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM. It is on Satyam Theatre Road beside Blue Fox Hotel, about an eight-minute walk from Ameerpet Metro. Chemotherapy days start early, so the care team will tell you what time to arrive for your blood test.
Yes. You are given a number to call. Mild tiredness or a poor appetite can usually wait for your next visit. Fever, bleeding, severe loose motions or breathlessness cannot. For those, go to the nearest emergency department first and tell your oncologist after.
