How does one phone call reach the right doctor and centre?

  1. 1

    Tell us what was found

The care team asks what the report says, which hospital did the test, where in Hyderabad you live, and which language the family prefers. You do not need to know the medical terms.

  2. 2

    We match the specialist

A breast lump with a biopsy goes one way. An abnormal blood count goes another. The team picks the specialty first, then the centre that is easiest for you on a day that doctor is in.

  3. 3

    The first consultation

The doctor reads every report, examines the patient and explains what is known. Bring the person who will help make decisions, and any old scans or discharge papers you have.

  4. 4

    One plan, made together

The case goes to the tumour board, where medical, surgical and radiation oncologists agree a plan. You hear the choices, where each step happens, and a written estimate before anything starts.

What happens at CION's Hyderabad centres, and what is arranged elsewhere?

Consultations, second opinions and day-care chemotherapy happen at the CION centres themselves. Operations and radiotherapy do not. Your CION doctors plan them, and the care team books them at the hospital or centre that does them, naming it before you agree.

1Day-care chemotherapy near home

Most chemotherapy is given in a single visit. Your blood counts are checked, the treatment is given, and you sleep at home that night. Because every Hyderabad centre gives day-care chemotherapy, you can often ask for later cycles at the centre closest to you. Your oncologist decides whether that is safe for your treatment.

2Picking a centre by where you live

Tell the care team your area when you call. They weigh two things: which centre is easiest for the family to reach, and which centre your doctor sees patients at that week. Sometimes the nearest centre and the right doctor line up. When they do not, the team explains the choice so you can decide whether to travel or wait a few days.

3Opening hours

CION's Hyderabad centres are open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM. Call ahead, because each doctor sees patients at set centres on set days.

4Paying for treatment

CION's team helps with cashless insurance and gives you a written estimate before you start. If you hold an employer or government scheme, ask the care team to check it when you call.

What do Hyderabad families often get wrong about choosing an oncologist?

Myth

"The most famous name in the city is the safest choice."

What is true: Fame tells you little about your own cancer. Ask whether the doctor treats your type regularly, and whether a tumour board reviews the plan. A team decision usually catches more than one person working alone.

Myth

"We should start treatment wherever the scan was done."

What is true: The centre that found the cancer may not treat it. Take every report and film with you. A few days spent seeing a cancer specialist first rarely harms anyone and often changes the plan for the better.

Myth

"Every visit means a long drive across Hyderabad."

What is true: Not always. Once the plan is set, many people have their day-care chemotherapy and check-ups at the CION centre nearest home. Ask about this at the first visit.

Myth

"If the first doctor says surgery, there is no other view."

What is true: For many cancers, medicines or radiotherapy before an operation give a better result. Sometimes surgery is not the right first step at all. A second opinion is a normal, quick way to check.

Seeing an oncologist at CION in Hyderabad: common questions

Still unsure? Call 1800 202 8726.

1How many CION centres are there in Hyderabad?

Seven: Ameerpet, Kukatpally, Kompally, Masab Tank, L.B. Nagar, Tolichowki and Banjara Hills. All of them give consultations and day-care chemotherapy. One helpline books every centre, so you do not need to call each one to find the doctor you need.

2Can I choose which doctor I see?

Yes. Tell the care team the name when you call. They will tell you where and when that doctor sees patients. If your reports suggest a different specialty would help more, they will say so plainly and let you decide.

3Do I need a referral letter?

No. You can book directly. A letter from the doctor who found the cancer is helpful but not needed. What matters most is that you bring every report, scan CD and discharge summary, including ones you think are old or unimportant.

4Where are operations and radiotherapy done?

Not at the CION centres. Your CION surgical or radiation oncologist plans the treatment, and the care team books it at the hospital or centre that gives it. You are told the place and given a written estimate before you agree to anything.

5What is a tumour board?

A meeting where medical, surgical and radiation oncologists look at your reports together and agree a plan. It means your plan is not one person's view. You hear what they recommended, the other choices, and why they chose as they did.

6Can I get a second opinion on a plan from another hospital?

Yes. Bring the plan and the reports behind it. A CION oncologist will tell you whether they agree, and if not, why. It does not commit you to treatment at CION. Many families do this simply to feel sure before starting.

7Does CION help with insurance?

CION's team helps with cashless insurance and gives you a written estimate before you start. Bring the insurance card and policy papers to the first visit. If you hold a government or employer scheme, mention it when you call so it can be checked.

8We live outside Hyderabad. Is it worth coming in?

Often, yes, for the first opinion and the plan. Tell the care team where you live. They will try to group your tests and consultation into as few trips as possible, and tell you which later steps might be given closer to home.
