Blood cancers
Leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma are treated mainly with medicines. A surgeon may take a small sample to confirm the diagnosis, but the treatment itself is led by a blood cancer specialist.
They decide whether an operation can remove the cancer, and plan it with medical and radiation oncologists. Call to check where and when your doctor is in.

An operation is one of three main tools. For some people it comes later, and for some it does not come at all.
Leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma are treated mainly with medicines. A surgeon may take a small sample to confirm the diagnosis, but the treatment itself is led by a blood cancer specialist.
When a cancer has reached several organs, removing one tumour rarely helps on its own. Medicines that reach the whole body usually come first. Surgery may still help later with a single problem, such as a blocked bowel.
Some cancers are easier and safer to remove after chemotherapy or radiotherapy has made them smaller. This is called neoadjuvant treatment, meaning treatment given before the operation.
A recent heart problem, poorly controlled sugar or heavy weight loss can make an operation riskier than the cancer. The team may build strength first, or choose a different treatment.

Leave your number on this page or call the helpline. The care team asks what has been found so far and which surgeon is in on the days that suit you.

Bring every biopsy report, scan and CD, blood test and discharge summary. The surgeon examines you and explains in plain words what an operation would involve.

Many people need a scan to see whether the cancer has spread, or a biopsy if one has not been done. Heart and lung checks show whether the body is ready for an anaesthetic.

Surgical, medical and radiation oncologists look at the case together. They agree whether surgery comes first, later, or not at all.

You are told the operation, the hospital where it happens, how far it is, and a written cost estimate. Only then do you decide.
Every case goes to CION’s network tumour board, where these specialists from CION’s centres join your doctor. Ask for any of them when you book.
Decide whether an operation can remove the cancer, and when.

The laboratory study of the tissue that was removed. This report matters more than the operation note.
The rim of normal tissue around the tumour. A clear margin means no cancer cells were seen at the cut edge.
Small glands that drain the area. The report says how many were removed and whether any held cancer cells.
How big the cancer was and how far it had spread. It decides what treatment, if any, comes next.
Chemotherapy or radiotherapy given after surgery to lower the chance of the cancer coming back.

Almost everything except the operation. The surgical consultation, the plan, chemotherapy before or after surgery, and the follow-up visits can all happen at CION Ameerpet.
If medicines are given to shrink the tumour first, or to lower the chance of it coming back afterwards, they are given at this centre, usually as day-care. You go home the same day. The surgeon and the medical oncologist see the same reports, so the timing of each step is agreed between them.
CION Cancer Clinics is on the second floor of HMDA Maitrivanam, Satyam Theatre Road, beside Blue Fox Hotel, Srinivasa Nagar, Ameerpet, Hyderabad 500038. It is close to Ameerpet Metro and the Ameerpet bus stop. The centre is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM.
People from Begumpet, SR Nagar, Punjagutta, Somajiguda and Erramanzil often find Ameerpet the easiest CION centre to reach. If Kukatpally, Kompally or another CION centre suits you better, the same helpline books it.
Good to know
This page cannot tell you whether you need an operation. Your reports and a surgeon's examination can.
Myth
What is true: This belief is common and it is not true. Air does not make a cancer grow. When a cancer is found to be larger than expected during an operation, it was already that size before the surgery began.
Myth
What is true: Sometimes that is true. Often the tissue report shows a reason for chemotherapy or radiotherapy afterwards. It is better to hear this as part of the plan than as a surprise later.
Myth
What is true: Age alone does not decide it. Fitness does. Many people in their seventies recover well from cancer surgery. The heart and lung checks before surgery give a far better answer than a birthday.
Myth
What is true: Speed matters, but the right order matters more. An operation done before the right scans can mean a second operation, or a missed chance to shrink the tumour first.

Dr. Sandeep Vajja, a surgical oncologist, sees patients at CION Ameerpet. Dr. Muralidhar Muddusetty is part of the same CION surgical team, and the care team tells you where and when he sees patients. Call the helpline to check which surgeon is in on the day you plan to come.
No. Ameerpet is where you meet the surgeon, plan the operation, receive chemotherapy if you need it, and come back for follow-up. Your care team names the hospital where the operation takes place, and tells you how far it is, before your family agrees to anything.
No. You can come with a scan, a lump you have felt, or a report that worries you. The surgeon will tell you whether a biopsy is needed, which kind, and where it is done. If you already have one, bring the report and, if you were given them, the slides or tissue block.
Not alone. The surgeon, the medical oncologist and the radiation oncologist discuss your case together at the tumour board. The medical oncologist plans any chemotherapy. At Ameerpet, that chemotherapy can be given at the same centre where you saw the surgeon.
Yes. Bring the advice you were given and every report behind it. The surgeon will tell you whether they agree with the operation, the timing and the approach, and explain why if they do not. A second opinion does not commit you to having the operation through CION.
CION's team helps with cashless insurance and gives you a written estimate before you start. The estimate covers the operation and the hospital stay that goes with it. Bring your insurance card and policy papers to the first visit so the team can check your cover early.
The centre is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM. It is on Satyam Theatre Road, beside Blue Fox Hotel, close to Ameerpet Metro and the bus stop. Call ahead so you know the surgeon you want to see is in on that day.
You come back to see the surgeon for wound checks and to go through the tissue report. You are given a number to call if you have a fever, bleeding, or pain that is getting worse. For anything sudden or severe, go to the nearest emergency department first.
