Leukaemias
Cancers of the blood-forming cells in the bone marrow. Acute types grow quickly and usually need admission to hospital soon after diagnosis. Chronic types grow slowly and are often treated with tablets, or simply watched.
Dr. Basudev Pokhrel, CION’s haematologist, works with the medical oncology team on leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Call to check where and when your doctor is in.

The care team asks what the report shows, who ordered it, and how the patient is feeling today. They then offer a time with Dr. Pokhrel at Kukatpally or L.B. Nagar.

Bring every blood count you can find, along with smear reports, scans and biopsy slides. A pattern over time often matters more than one result.

Dr. Pokhrel examines the patient, looks for swollen glands or an enlarged spleen, and explains what the reports do and do not show yet.

A bone marrow test or a lymph node biopsy usually confirms the diagnosis. You then get the plan and a written estimate before anything starts.
Each of these is a family of diseases rather than one. The exact type shapes the treatment.
Cancers of the blood-forming cells in the bone marrow. Acute types grow quickly and usually need admission to hospital soon after diagnosis. Chronic types grow slowly and are often treated with tablets, or simply watched.
Cancers of the lymph glands, often first noticed as a lump that does not hurt and does not go away. Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma are treated quite differently.
A cancer of plasma cells, the cells that make antibodies. It can weaken bones, affect the kidneys and lower the haemoglobin. Blood and urine protein tests help find it.
Platelets that keep falling, a white count that stays high, or a haemoglobin that will not rise with iron. The haematologist looks for the cause, which is often not cancer at all.
Every case goes to CION’s network tumour board, where these specialists from CION’s centres join your doctor. Ask for any of them when you book.

Start with a Consultation
Ask for the doctor you want, or we’ll match you.
CION Banjara Hills gives consultations and chemotherapy as day-care. For someone with a blood cancer, that can make the months of treatment easier, once the haematologist agrees that day-care suits the plan.
The centre is in Banjara Hills. It is about five minutes from Errum Manzil Metro and near the Irrum Manzil bus stop. Call the helpline for directions before your first visit. The centre is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM.
Families from Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Film Nagar, Yousufguda, Punjagutta and the Road No. 12 side often find Banjara Hills convenient. If Kukatpally is closer for you, the same helpline books that centre too.
Some blood cancer treatments need a hospital bed, close watch on blood counts and quick access to transfusions. The first phase of treatment for acute leukaemia is the clearest example. Dr. Pokhrel tells you early if this applies, and where it would happen.
Good to know
This page describes the centre. It cannot tell you which treatment you need. Your reports and the haematologist can.
Why it matters: Platelets may be low or not working well
Why it matters: White cells may not be fighting infection normally
Why it matters: A lymph gland may need a biopsy
Why it matters: These can go with lymphoma and need checking
Why it matters: The cause needs finding if iron does not help
Myth
What is true: Lymphoma lumps are usually not painful. That is exactly why they get ignored. Any gland that stays swollen for several weeks deserves a doctor's look, whether it hurts or not.
Myth
What is true: Most blood cancers are not inherited. They come from changes in cells that happen during a person's life. A few rare conditions do run in families, and your haematologist will ask about this.
Myth
What is true: Some blood cancers cause few symptoms early on. A report that flags blasts or very low counts should be seen by a specialist soon, even if the patient is still going to work.
Myth
What is true: Many people with lymphoma or myeloma are treated as day-care, or with tablets at home. Some leukaemias need admission. Your haematologist tells you which applies before you start.
Counts red cells, white cells and platelets. It is usually the first clue that something is wrong.
Blood spread on a glass slide and viewed under a microscope, to see the shape of each kind of cell.
Liquid marrow and a thin core of bone taken from the hip with local numbing. It shows how blood is being made.
Part or all of a swollen gland is removed and examined. It is how lymphoma is confirmed and typed.
A blood or urine test that looks for an abnormal protein made by myeloma cells.

CION's haematologist, Dr. Basudev Pokhrel, sees patients at CION Kukatpally and CION L.B. Nagar, not at Banjara Hills. The Banjara Hills team can still take your call, look at what you have, and book the consultation at whichever of those centres suits your family.
He holds an MBBS, an MD in Immunohaematology and Blood Transfusion, and a Fellowship in Clinical Haematology from CMC Vellore. That combination covers both blood cancers and the blood-count problems that are often mistaken for them, along with transfusion support during treatment.
We only print details we can confirm. The centre is in Banjara Hills, about five minutes from Errum Manzil Metro and near the Irrum Manzil bus stop. Call the helpline before your visit and the care team will give you exact directions.
Chemotherapy is given at CION Banjara Hills as day-care. Whether your own treatment can be given there depends on the type of blood cancer and its phase. Dr. Pokhrel decides, and tells you where each part of the treatment will happen before you agree.
Call the helpline the same day and read the report out to the care team. A very high count can have simple causes, such as infection, but it can also need urgent attention. If the patient is unwell, breathless or bleeding, go to an emergency department first.
No letter is needed to book. A note from the doctor who ordered the test helps the haematologist understand why it was done. More important is every blood report you have, including old ones, so changes over time can be seen.
CION's team helps with cashless insurance and gives you a written estimate before you start. Bring your insurance card and policy papers on the first visit. If an employer or government scheme covers you, tell the care team when you call so they can check it.
Yes. Bring the plan, the bone marrow or biopsy reports, and the slides if you have them. Dr. Pokhrel will go through them and say whether he agrees, and why. A second opinion does not commit you to treatment at CION.
