Which blood conditions lead families to a haematologist?

Your report usually hints at one of these. The consultation confirms which.

Leukaemia

The marrow makes abnormal white cells that crowd out normal ones. That leads to tiredness, infections and bleeding. Acute and chronic types are treated very differently.

Usually confirmed by

  • Blood smear
  • Bone marrow test with flow cytometry

Lymphoma

Lymph glands enlarge with abnormal cells. Often a lump that does not hurt, sometimes with fevers and night sweats.

Usually confirmed by

  • Biopsy of a gland
  • Scans to find every affected area

Myeloma

Abnormal plasma cells build up in the marrow. Bone pain, kidney problems and a low haemoglobin are common.

Usually confirmed by

  • Blood and urine protein tests
  • Bone marrow test

Blood-count disorders

Counts that are too low or too high without a clear reason. Many are not cancer, but all need a cause.

Usually starts with

  • Repeat count and smear
  • Iron, vitamin and infection tests

How do acute and chronic leukaemia differ?

Symptoms come on over a short time

Chronic: Often found by chance on a routine test

Many young, immature cells (blasts)

Chronic: Cells are more mature but too many

Treatment usually starts soon, in hospital

Chronic: Tablets, or careful watching at first

Intensive phases of treatment

Chronic: Long-term control is often the aim

What happens between your first call and the start of treatment?

  1. 1

    You call the helpline

Share the report and the patient's symptoms. The team books Dr. Pokhrel at Kukatpally or L.B. Nagar and tells you which papers to bring.

  2. 2

    The consultation

He takes a careful history, examines the patient for swollen glands, an enlarged spleen and bruising, and goes through every report.

  3. 3

    The diagnostic test

If needed, a bone marrow test or a gland biopsy. The team explains where and when, and how to prepare.

  4. 4

    A clear plan

Once the type is known, you hear the treatment advised, the alternatives, where each part happens, and a written estimate.

  5. 5

Treatment closer to home where possible

If day-care suits, part of the treatment may happen at Tolichowki. Dr. Pokhrel keeps overseeing the plan throughout.

Where is CION Tolichowki, and what can it do for you?

CION Tolichowki gives cancer consultations and day-care chemotherapy. The haematology consultation itself is at Kukatpally or L.B. Nagar.

1Address and timings

CION Cancer Clinics, 12-2-718, Khader Bagh Road, inside Premier Hospital, Padmanabha Nagar, Toli Chowki, Hyderabad 500008. It is near the Tolichowki bus stop. The centre is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM.

2Who comes here

Families from Mehdipatnam, Attapur, Rethibowli, Nadeem Colony, Karwan and Langar Houz often find Tolichowki the closest CION centre. The helpline books every CION centre, so you can choose whichever is easiest on a given day.

3Treatment at the centre

Chemotherapy is given here as day-care: counts checked, treatment given, home the same day. Many lymphoma and myeloma treatments suit this setting. Dr. Pokhrel decides whether yours does.

4Keeping the family in the loop

Blood cancer treatment often runs for months, with many visits in between for blood counts and reviews. It helps to name one family member as the main contact. That person keeps every report in one folder, notes questions as they come up, and comes to the key consultations. The care team calls that person when results are ready or plans change.

5What this centre does not do

CION Tolichowki is an outpatient centre for consultations and day-care treatment. If a treatment needs a hospital bed, or if a transplant is ever discussed, your care team names the hospital and explains why before you agree.

Good to know

This page describes where care happens. It cannot tell you what your report means for you.

What do these blood test terms mean in everyday words?

MCV

The average size of red cells. Small cells often point to low iron; large ones to other causes.

ESR

A general sign of inflammation. It is high in many conditions and does not name any one disease.

LDH

An enzyme that rises when cells are turning over fast, as in some lymphomas.

Smear

Blood on a slide, studied under a microscope to check the cells' shape and maturity.

Flow cytometry

A lab test that names the exact type of leukaemia or lymphoma from markers on the cells.

Which beliefs about blood cancer can cause harm?

Myth

"Talking about blood cancer at home will scare the patient."

What is true: Most patients cope better when they understand what is happening and are part of the decisions. The haematologist can help the family find the right words.

Myth

"Antibiotics should fix repeated fevers."

What is true: If fevers keep coming back despite antibiotics, the white cells themselves may be the problem. A blood count and smear are a sensible next step.

Myth

"Blood cancer always shows on a scan."

What is true: Leukaemia and myeloma often do not show as a lump at all. They are found through blood and marrow tests. Scans matter more for lymphoma.

Myth

"Once in remission, nothing more needs doing."

What is true: Remission means tests no longer find the disease. Follow-up counts continue, and some people take maintenance treatment to keep it that way.

Book a Haematology Consultation

Leave your number and our care team calls you back, or call any time. One helpline serves every CION centre.

Medically reviewed by Dr. Basudev Pokhrel, Consultant Haematologist (MBBS, MD (Immunohaematology & Blood Transfusion), Fellowship in Clinical Haematology (CMC Vellore)). Last reviewed October 2026. This page is general information for families from Tolichowki, not medical advice: your specialist advises on tests and treatment after seeing you.

What Tolichowki families ask about seeing a haematologist

Still unsure? Call 1800 202 8726.

1Can I see Dr. Pokhrel at CION Tolichowki?

Dr. Basudev Pokhrel sees patients at CION Kukatpally and CION L.B. Nagar, not at Tolichowki. Call the helpline that serves Tolichowki and the care team will book the consultation at whichever of those two centres is easier for your family to reach.

2What are Dr. Pokhrel's qualifications?

He holds an MBBS, an MD in Immunohaematology and Blood Transfusion, and a Fellowship in Clinical Haematology from CMC Vellore. That training covers leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, other blood disorders, and transfusion support during treatment.

3Is CION Tolichowki inside a hospital?

Yes. The centre's address is inside Premier Hospital on Khader Bagh Road, Padmanabha Nagar. When you arrive, ask for CION Cancer Clinics. The care team can guide you over the phone if you have any trouble finding it.

4Can blood cancer treatment be given at Tolichowki?

Chemotherapy is given at CION Tolichowki as day-care. Whether your treatment can be given here depends on the type of blood cancer and the phase of treatment. Dr. Pokhrel decides, and the team tells you where each part will happen before you start.

5My father's haemoglobin is low despite iron tablets. What next?

A low haemoglobin that does not respond to iron needs a proper search for the cause. That may include tests for vitamins, kidneys, blood loss and the marrow. In an older adult with back pain, myeloma is one thing a haematologist will check for.

6Do children with blood disorders see Dr. Pokhrel?

Call the care team and explain the child's age and report. They will tell you whether the consultation with Dr. Pokhrel is the right first step, or whether a children's cancer specialist should see the child, and help arrange it.

7How are costs and insurance handled?

CION's team helps with cashless insurance and gives you a written estimate before you start. Bring your insurance card and policy papers to the first visit. If an employer or government scheme covers you, mention it when you call so the team can check.

8Can we bring a plan from another hospital for review?

Yes. Bring the plan, every report behind it, and the biopsy slides or marrow report if you have them. Dr. Pokhrel will say whether he agrees and explain any differences. A second opinion does not commit you to treatment at CION.
